At Whirlpool Corp. in Evansville, Ind., 39 factory workers, all who had claimed they were non-smokers to get a $500 discount on their company health insurance, were suspended without pay after they were seen smoking outside their factory.

I'm sick of paying for fat fatties and smokers health problems.
If I take care my health, I shouldn't have to shell out more for those who think that being the size of a blimp or chain smoking is OK.
To do otherwise is fraud ..
“if you smoke, you should state so on your insurance form.

Agreed. Now, will you agree that illegal aliens working there and lied about who they are should be fired also?
I can just see it. An illegal alien gets fired for smoking but they won’t ask if he’s legally working...
Not in the State of Colorado. We’ve got ourselves a nice little law that says no employer may fire a person for activites outside of work.
I am just curious as to how many responders will agree with fraud. Around here, this is considered grand theft and is punishable as a felony.
“If I take care my health”
Well, then, we need ourselves a regulatory agency to ensure that you are, indeed, in shape. So, please report to the activities field at 0500 tomorrow for physical fitness testing and for your annual week long health and dieting instructions. You will be needing to provide a urine sample and a blood sample as well as sign a release form for your DNA to be checked against know potential hereditary diseases. Any failure of the physical fitness test, urine or blood sampling, or any detection of potential disease in your DNA will result in the immediate termination of your State issued employment license and involuntary admission into the health physical fitness program. Have a good day, it’s all for your health and our protection.
Smoking or not, those jobs probably will be outsourced overseas in a year or two anyhow to a factory where you can smoke til you choke and nobody cares.
That said, nobody loves a snitch.
I won’t agree with the fraud, but my mother was a smoker/non-smoker/smoker/non-smoker most of her life. What if she was continually trying to quit and considered herself a non-smoker if she went a week without a butt?
Timing is everything.
They stole money from their employer. They deserved to be fired.

You already do, even if every person who buys insurance suddenly becomes anorexic and san cigs.
Medicaid
Got to love it! A lose-lose for them.
Whatever they saved by defrauding their employer will be moot because of lost wages, not to mention they'll now have to pay the smoker's rate. The employer should go back and also bill them for they difference of rates.
It is another example of stupid criminal tricks. At some point if they had medical issues cause by smoking....DUH!!
Relativism is the idea that some element or aspect of experience or culture is relative to, i.e., dependent on, some other element or aspect. Some relativists claim that humans can understand and evaluate beliefs and behaviors only in terms of their historical or cultural context. The term often refers to truth relativism, which is the doctrine that there are no absolute truths, i.e., that truth is always relative to some particular frame of reference, such as a language or a culture.
There are probably some amoung us who believe that the speed limits do not apply to them. Because . . .

Prove that it was caused specifically by smoking. You can’t.
People get lung cancer and heart disease without ever touching a cigarette.
Doctor says, Do you smoke?
Patient - No.
Live with someone that smokes?
Patient - no
Doctor says - parent smoked?
Patient - Yes
Doctor concludes patient has disease because of “Second hand smoke”
Patient has smoked his entire life.
See?

If your insurance company is doing its job properly, you aren’t. A smoker who lies on his insurance application is uninsured.
how stooopid do you have to be to sign a paper saying you don't smoke, and then get caught smoking on company property???
I’m not saying that it’s right, I’m saying that if the question was, Do you smoke? and was not followed with, Have you ever and When did you quit? Then the insurance was setting themselves up.
Smokers who go a week without consider themselves former smokers, even if they are going to go back next week. I was married to one of those for a long time. He is now truly a Non-smoker.
Ya’ll come over here please.
I work for a company with the same type of health insurance non-smoking discount program.
First, the question is, “Have you used tobacco products in the last year?” The form specifically includes cigarettes, cigars, pipes and smokeless tobacco.
Secondly, employees are informed by human resources that people falsely claiming to be non-tobacco users are subject to termination for cause.
Assuming Whirlpool used the same language, I don’t have too much sympathy for the employees.
