Teen FLDS mother gives birth while state officials stand by

SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP) — One of the hundreds of young polygamist-sect members taken into custody by the state was giving birth Tuesday while child welfare officials, state troopers and fellow sect members stood watch outside the maternity ward.

The teenager was admitted to the Central Texas Medical Center and was in labor, said Rod Parker, a spokesman for the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a renegade Mormon sect. He contends she is 18, but state officials have the girl on a list of minors taken into state custody.

Two armed state troopers and at least one person wearing the shirt of a Department of Family and Protective Services worker stood outside the maternity ward. A woman wearing the FLDS's trademark pastel prairie dress and upswept braided hair sat calmly in the nearby waiting room. All declined to comment, as did a woman who said she was the girl's attorney.

State officials raided the FLDS's Yearning For Zion Ranch in Eldorado on April 3. They took custody of 463 children on the belief that the sect's practice of underage and polygamous spiritual marriages endangered the children.

A number of girls first listed as adults were reclassified as minors as Child Protective Services, a division of Family and Protective Services, moved the children last week from a mass shelter in San Angelo to foster care facilities around the state, including some near San Marcos, in central Texas.

Of the 463 children [in CPS custody], 250 are girls and 213 are boys. Children 13 and younger are about evenly split — 197 girls and 196 boys — but there are only 17 boys aged 14 to 17 compared with the 53 girls in that age range.

Very good work with the stats. You are the first one that I have seen with all of this information.

This one does not seem to pass the sniff test... I know it has relieved some of the pressure on the state but it doesn’t smell right.

First CPS identified 5 girls that they thought were under 18 and pregnant or with a baby already... One of those somehow proved she was 18 another turned 18 in the process — so they were down to 4 suspected. Then the day or two before or the day that they were going to snatch the babies from the Mothers. 25 or so young women (with babies) came forward and said they were 17. I believe all of the “minors” got to stay with their babies while all other “adult” Mothers had their babies and toddlers snatched by the CPS. The CPS certainly would have made that very clear to all the Mothers — if you are a minor you keep the baby — if your an adult you lose the baby.

Now if I was a Mother who was about to have my baby snatched I would very quickly become 17.

I wish the CPS would publish the age of all the Mothers. I wonder if all of a sudden there are no Mothers between the age of 18 and 23. I may be wrong — only time will tell. If I am right the State may end up with a lot of egg on the face.

One can learn alot from accurate unmanipulated stats.

Well I hope they go back to the way we used to do things and foot print this one and thumb print his mother.

That poor girl - who may or may not be under 18 - all they say is that they have her on some “list” - giving birth with armed cops, state welfare buzzard, media, etc, outside the door. This is revolting. She, personally, has exactly WHAT to do with pending abuse charges against men that they are gathering evidence for - presumably. What are they going to do, take her baby for evidence? I’m sick to my stomach.

Save you sympathy. I doubt she cared who was outside her door as long as it wasn't the anesthesiologist.

I can’t imagine they would not use the standard procedures required by law to identify the baby and mother. I see no reason why she would be treated any differently that any other mother by the hospital.

You seem to have a fear of them.

Two armed state troopers

That should go without saying. Why do people have to make it sound like armed troopers are gestapo? I would expect them to be armed, like they could do any good if they weren't.

Considering that sect members were in the vicinity, I can see why there'd be some need for security. Who needs the baby disappearing?

Someone mentioned the other day that hospitals no longer match infant and mother. That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen but in this case the baby may need to be treated with extra precautions.

I never heard that. Matter of fact, my best friend’s daughter just had a baby and the security involved in HER even getting to hold the baby was unreal.

Babies are also routinely banded with something that trips the hospital security system. That’s how they caught that one lady recently who pretended to be an orderly and carried the baby out in a tote bag.

I would expect them to be extra careful in this case.

Or to put it less gently, at least 130 of those 196 boys age 13 and younger were slated to be discarded by the supposedly loving families they were “torn from”. CPS can’t possibly do worse by these children that the FLDS cult would have done.

Of course, prior to the announcement that girls 18 and over would be separated from their children over one year of age, the cult leaders had plenty of reason to order these girls to lie and say they were 18 or older even if they were younger, since confirmed pregnancies or childbirth in girls under 18 would be evidence of statutory rape, given the fathers’ ages. If you’ve read the affidavit in support of the second warrant, CPS workers witnessed this in action at the ranch, before any children were removed. They saw a girl who looked underage with a man they had been told was her husband. They went up and asked her how old she was and she turned to her husband to find out what she should say. HE said to her “you’re 18”, and then she told the CPS worker she was 18. Talk about not passing the sniff test . . .
