I think a lot of Dems would rather lose with Obama than win with Hillary. They know a second Clinton Presidency would kill the party.

I think you are right

But it is her vengeance and lust for power they fear most

Very astute, both of you.
As I have been explaining here on FR, Party leaders will not give Hillary the nomination, because they have already stabbed the Clintons in the back, and they know that the Clintons are very vengeful. For them to seize control of the Party apparatus would mean Stalinist-style purges of the "disloyal" from the Party.
The Clintons will settle new scores and old alike, once they have control over the DNC again.

This is why Howard Dean and Nancy Pelosi appear so pro-Obama. Because they are. And the fact that they have been working on his behalf makes it all that much more imperative that Obama wins, because if he doesn't both will learn just how much of a bitch payback can be when the Clintons are back in power at the top of the Democrat party. Dean will be out at the DNC in a heartbeat, and the Clintons will see to it that Pelosi is replaced as speaker with a Clinton loyalist, probably John Murtha or Rahm Emanuel.
