Governor's budget plan grows green staff (More & Bigger Gubamint .. where the real green is)

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's near-and-dear fight to make the state greener is adding a lot of new jobs to the state's already-in-the-red payroll.

The governor's latest budget proposal calls for no fewer than 211 greenhouse-gas busters to be sprinkled throughout state government, at an annual cost of $55.4 million.

That's 77 more greenies than are on the payroll this year.

The new jobs range from $36,000-a-year accounting technicians to $102,000-a-year attorneys to draft and enforce green regulations.

Fully half the money and three-fourths of the jobs would go to the California Air Resources Board, the agency charged with monitoring pollution and greenhouse-gas emissions in the private sector.

A third of all the hires would be air resources engineers and pollution specialists, whose salaries are set at between $60,000 and $72,000 a year, according to state budget analysts.

The rest of the money and green enforcers would be spread around state government.

In addition to what's in the spending plan, there are "off budget" goodies - like the $600 million the state Public Utilities Commission has decided to spend over the next decade for a new Climate Change Institute at UC Berkeley, to be funded by utility customers.

Add in Schwarzenegger's directive that state agencies work to curb their own greenhouse gases - an order that has prompted the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to come up with new energy-efficient heating and water systems in the prisons - and the state's total green spending tab is even higher.

As for the 211 jobs identified by the governor in his new budget, they are all being funded under AB32, the first-in-the-nation anti-global-warming bill that Schwarzenegger signed two years ago. Schwarzenegger landed on the covers of Time, Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report after that, winning accolades as the new green action hero.

But with California’s economy now facing its own green crisis - a budget deficit that the governor himself says could reach $20 billion - some legislative Republicans and business lobbyists are urging Schwarzenegger to put the brakes on the state’s plan to cap greenhouse emissions.

Who’s looking out for who here?

If I had it to do over, I would not have left my ballot blank (which I did), I would have voted against him.

No democrat could have achieved what this TrojanHorse Austrian socialist has done.

It won't be long before the labor unions and the enviro-whackos are fighting each other for the money.

If something major doesn't shift soon, I may be close to giving up on my beloved state.

I think I am starting to believe Algore about the nasty effects of global warming. It sure seems to have the weak minded liberals/commies/socialists threatening, proposing, & passing the strangest and most illogical things.

Maybe it is time to screw in some new lite bulbs!!!!!!!!!!

<< If something major doesn’t shift soon, I may be close to giving up on my beloved state. >>

I feel yer pain, Dan. I’m also a native Californio, but my breaking point came in late 2005. I now make my home in Dallas.

After reluctantly giving my vote to Arnold, I watched as he slowly rolled over for the left. His last attempt to maintain any semblance of Republicanism was the raft of initiatives he put before the voters early in his administration, which were promptly shot down. Since then, he seems to have magically transformed into a liberal Democrat.

Is it any wonder why California loses more native born Americans every year than it attracts? I fear that things are going to continue to worsen there, until the pain in California becomes so great that it causes a major socio-political upheaval.

It’s like a junkie having to hit rock bottom before he sees the light, and pulls himself up by his own bootstraps. Magnify that junkie’s painful re-orientation to the magnitude of an entire state, and it conjures up some fairly horrifying scenarios.

In the end, what happens in California may become a real-time object lesson in the futility of liberal government for the rest of the country.

Forget that California is flat broke. What's needed is enforcing useless regulations that strangle the state's economy. California has Red Arnold to thank for it if the economy can't rebound as it did last time around.

The regs that will really hurt are the proposed CARB regs on diesel engines...something like 2/3 of all current engines won’t meet the standard...whole companies will not be able to use their equipment if these regs go through...think there are unemployment problems now?....just wait till these regs are implimented...

I think you could have stopped here:

The regs that will really hurt are the proposed CARB regs.
I am convinced these people want to shut down all production in this state.

Here's what will happen. If you own a auto or truck that is in violation of the new CARB regs, you will have to pay a CO2 tax (Sorry, CO2 fee) to offset the amount of CO2 you are dumping.
If I was an auto manufacture, I would refuse sell in the land of nuts and fruit cakes.
