Gay marriage does not work - men are just too predatory, says Pete Burns

By JAMES TAPPER - More by this author » Last updated at 22:23pm on 3rd May 2008

Comments Comments When he flashed his engagement ring on the sofa with Richard and Judy, pop star Pete Burns told of his happiness at the prospect of becoming the latest celebrity to marry his male partner.

But now, just ten months after the big day, the singer has split from Michael Simpson, saying civil partnerships do not work and that he was happier being married to a woman.

Burns, 49, who was wed to stylist Lynne Corlett for 28 years, said gay relationships were a "commercial break" compared with the "full movie" of marriage.

Pete Burns dresses as a geisha girl on his wedding day with Michael Simpson. But he says that gay marriages do not work because men are too predatory

He also claimed there were too much "promiscuity" in the gay community for civil partnerships to thrive.

Burns followed in the footsteps of Sir Elton John and Little Britain star Matt Lucas in using the new civil partnership laws to announce his public devotion to his lover.

He dressed as a geisha girl in a kimono for the ceremony in London on July 7 last year.

He told The Mail on Sunday he had been "optimistic" about his civil partnership, but now he says: "I learned the hard way. It's a total joke."

Burns accused Simpson, 40, of being unfaithful and admitted he felt disillusioned. Burns added that some gay couples had "open marriages" where the partners could be unfaithful.

He said: "There's a lot of promiscuity in the gay community. I don't understand why they take that union. How low is their self-esteem?

"One's on Hampstead Heath meeting men, the other one's hiring rent boys. "Surely marriage is throwing anchor and saying, 'This is where I'm staying, I've made my choice and this is all I want because I've been on the up and down escalator, through the revolving door and I want to stand still.' That's what I expected."

He added: "I don't know what goes on in many heterosexual marriages but I know mine was 28 years.

Pete, with ex-wife Lynne Corlett, says he preferred being married to a woman

As far as I was concerned that was for ever, and it would have been, but she needed to find her own life.

"She was the best 'husband' I ever had. You sometimes meet a person who you completely love. We're still really, really close. It's not about sexuality, it's about the person."

Since the Civil Partnership Act came into force in December 2005, there have been 18,000 gay marriages in Britain.

Burns said: "I view marriage as a sacred institution. I think two men naturally are predators. Gay relationships are a commercial break, not a whole movie.

"The relationships I'm aware of, apart from one ... it's as though there's some kind of emotional inadequacy or narcissism, where they feel emotionally inadequate and need more validation, from either a father figure or a mirror image of themselves. "I'm not condemning it, I think it needs researching and help."

Burns and his band Dead Or Alive had a No1 hit with You Spin Me Round in 1985, but his career went into decline until he went on Celebrity Big Brother in 2006.

He met Simpson at Joe Allen restaurant in Soho in 2003. They announced their engagement on Channel 4's Richard & Judy Show in 2006.

Last week, police launched an investigation after Burns alleged that Simpson had assaulted him at home, breaking his collarbone.

Burns said he wanted to file for divorce. He added: "Would I get married again? If somebody knocked me on the head with a nine-inch nail-studded plank or drugged me with benzodiazepine ... No, no, no."

Derek Munn, of the gay rights organisation Stonewall, said: "Civil partnerships have brought joy and fulfilment to thousands of lesbian and gay couples.

"Just as with marriage, some relationships may fail."

Mr Simpson was unavailable for comment.

“It takes a woman, all powdered and pink,
To joyously clean out the drain in the sink,
And it takes an angel with long golden lashes
And soft dresden fingers
For dumping the ashes...
Yes it takes a woman, a dainty woman
To bring you the sweet things in life!

The frail young maiden who’s constantly there
For washing
And bluing
And shoeing the mare...”

I sometimes think that the whole gay marriage thing was promoted by gay attorneys who could not wait to profit on the huge number of gay divorces that would ensue.

Then there are the gay florists and caterers who would profit too. Gay marriage is an industry.

The fact is, the biggest pushers of gay marriage, know that few gays will get married. It has always been about legitimizing gay behavior, and making people consider it to be equal with heterosexuality.

What a perfect blend.
He got the dominant genes for English eccentricity from his father

Ha ha. However...men reproduce a lot more quickly than women. Women have to go through a lot in order to reproduce and men don’t have to do much at all. I think it explains women’s relative caution and men’s greater tendency towards reckless abandon.
Traditional marriage was set up in order to civilize men and redirect those predatory impuses towards (hopefully) one woman and towards providing for the family. Traditional marriage will never be perfect, but it’s the best way we have of taming man’s impulse to go forth and multiply as much as possible.

I agree. That’s some of the most disgusting pictures I hope to never see again. Perverts.

And good for him with his new “insight” into the institution of marriage. What a joke. Another messed-up product of relative morality, he will never really really understand the sanctity of marriage (not that many “traditional”-male and female-marriages do either these days). It’s the best-known and best possible social unit for two people who are committed to each other and their potential children to be part of a civilised society, and it takes work and maturity, just like being a productive member of society in any aspect does. It’s more give and less take, more sacrifice (with the loving emotional attachment, amongst other factors, providing the motivation for such sacrifice), not “wot’s in it for me?” That’s why the entitlement- and me-centered generations and victimhood, instant gratification, “I’m owed” educated bunch will never get it right and make a go of it.

To me it all boils down to there only being one valid reason for society to sanction marriage. Men and women generally produce offspring. They are our future and they need protection until they come of age, therefore it is in societies interest to protect the relationship between their parents.

Romans 1:25-27 tells us that same-sex sexual relationships are a consequence of idolatry. In other words, such relationships are a consequence of disobeying the 1ST COMMANDMENT, a major aspect of the GREATEST COMMANDMENT, to love the jealous God with all your being.

Homosexuals need to keep in mind, however, that the good news of the gospel is not about how God despises same-sex sexual relationships. In fact, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 indicates that certain members of that church had been slaves to such relationships but had been cleansed in Jesus' name. So these former homosexuals had evidently repented and accepted God's grace to straighten their lives out.

We’re not exactly setting records though. 50% divorce rate, Fewer children, school issues, we’re near last in western democracies in education standards. While I’m somewhat neutral on the issue of gay unions, I don’t view them as a threat to my family or my marriage. We do need to encourage a family setting but not at the expense of all those who don’t fit the mold, both straight and gay. I live in a community where almost half are gay couples. I’ve lived here now 16 years and haven’t seen any couples split up yet, either gay or straight. Some of the gay couples here have been together 20 or more years.

I’ve heard about gay promiscuity but I sure don’t see it in my community. I’ve heard a lot of the negatives and I haven’t seen it here.

Here's my challenge to you then. What is it about gay sex that makes a gay relationship any more significant than some other non-sexual relationship? For example, suppose that I and my brother live together and have a very close non-sexual relationship. Why is our relationship any less significant than the gay couple's down the street? Why is it any less significant than the straight couple's next door?

FWIW, I don't really care that much about gay marriage either. It won't bring about the end of the world, God's wrath or the downfall of civilization. I just think that state recognition of gay marriage is just a hare brained idea because these relationships are of no value to society at large.

No value to you or me but value to them obviously. I’m not pushing gay marriage at all but I don’t see it as a threat to other relationships or to society either. I see lots of valueless domestic situations even within some families over the years. For me I’m happy with my family, my kids, my grandkids and my way of life and wouldn’t trade it for anything but I just don’t see the threat from those who live different lives as long as they are not harming anyone.
