Six federally protected sea lions were apparently shot to death on the Columbia River as they lay in open traps put out to ensnare the animals, which eat endangered salmon. State and federal authorities are investigating.
The discovery came one day after three elephant seals were found shot to death at a breeding ground in central California.
Trapping will be suspended during the investigation, said Rick Hargrave, a spokesman for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife who was at the scene Sunday.

Don’t you just love the irony?
“Six federally protected sea lions were apparently shot to death on the Columbia River as they lay in open traps put out to ensnare the animals, which eat endangered salmon.”
What do they do with them? Relocate them to Detroit?
About time.

“Six federally protected sea lions were apparently shot to death”
Why do I see Dudley Do-Right in is Canadian mounted police uniform making this statement?
“Halt, those are federally protected sea lions you are shooting there”.
Oh brother, much ado about nothing.....
About time is right. All they are is stray dogs.
That eat salmon. No one could've ever seen this coming. Welfare for pinnipeds!
LOL. This is almost as good as the Liberals who cannot figure out if they should support Hillary because she is a woman, or Obama because he is black.
Or, should they be for the Tibetans because they are oppressed by the Chinese, or be for the Chinese, because they worked so hard to help the Clintons get into office?
Decisions, decisions...

I’m sure somebody simply overlooked the official “Gun-Free Zone” sign. Usually, they’re very effective.
Honest mistake. Could happen to anyone.
The a$$hats in Seattle tried a variety of things to get rid of said pinnaped. They tried loud noises, a big, fake killer whale, all kinds of stuff, with no results. They even airlifted the beast down to California, but he was back a few weeks later, scarfing down fish. I don't know if someone finally shot him; maybe a Seattle Freeper can fill in the holes.
Deer on the east coast, seals on the west, and ravens in Wales. Amazing what "no kill" rules can do....
Is that similar to Attorneys General?

Maybe they could feed the sea lions to the wolves in Yellowstone.
LOL! nice
What they need is some protected grizzly bears. That’ll fix it.
Rats with fins...
Why would they kill Elephant Seals, which don’t eat Salmon.
I am a Western Washington (aka “Liberal Hell, Northern Sector”) FReeper.
You’re speaking of “Herschel”. He and the ‘gang’ of sea lions he seemed to lead chowed down on salmon at the Ballard Locks back in the 90’s.
After they swam back from California, they studied other ways of dealing with them. When they finally got permission to kill him...after almost 12 years...Herschel was long gone. Three other sea lions (one of them named “Hondo”) replaced him. They were captured and taken to a permanent home at Sea World San Diego.
The ultimate questions - What do they do when one protected species eats another protected species? KILL ‘EM!
They didn't sit down and negotiate with him and try to convince him although we really love him, he shouldn't eat all the fish?
HUGH rats with fins. Almost as big as some of the city rats. Or the demorats.
Not a lot of sport in shooting sea lions or manatees.
To bad the shooter didn’t at least butcher them and take the meat to a food bank.
MMMMMM sea lion meat....
Down here in La on the grounds of ANgola prison a group of bears has emerged, due to the high water some say. And they are reproducing.
The Warden is tickled pink. He says it will make the convicts think twice about trying to escape!
Some species are more protected than others.
Yep. It’s time for a bounty on the little dears. Coastal Indians eat them with great enjoyment. One of their favorite delicacies is herring eggs dipped in seal oil.
Libertarian ping! To be added or removed from my ping list freepmail me or post a message here.
You have federally-protected sea lions eating federally-protected salmon, so the sea lions are trapped by the federal government in order to starve thsm so they don't eat the salmon.
Then a non-federally-protected species (human, no doubt) stops by to put an end to this circular logic and everybody gets their panties in a wad.
No doubt about it, I have lived too long.
Chuckling here. You’ve got to love that.
UPDATE: it turns out the sea lions were not shot, after all.
They now are investigating why they died.
