I am a Western Washington (aka “Liberal Hell, Northern Sector”) FReeper.
You’re speaking of “Herschel”. He and the ‘gang’ of sea lions he seemed to lead chowed down on salmon at the Ballard Locks back in the 90’s.
After they swam back from California, they studied other ways of dealing with them. When they finally got permission to kill him...after almost 12 years...Herschel was long gone. Three other sea lions (one of them named “Hondo”) replaced him. They were captured and taken to a permanent home at Sea World San Diego.
The ultimate questions - What do they do when one protected species eats another protected species? KILL ‘EM!
They didn't sit down and negotiate with him and try to convince him although we really love him, he shouldn't eat all the fish?
HUGH rats with fins. Almost as big as some of the city rats. Or the demorats.
Not a lot of sport in shooting sea lions or manatees.
To bad the shooter didn’t at least butcher them and take the meat to a food bank.
MMMMMM sea lion meat....
Down here in La on the grounds of ANgola prison a group of bears has emerged, due to the high water some say. And they are reproducing.
The Warden is tickled pink. He says it will make the convicts think twice about trying to escape!
Some species are more protected than others.
Yep. It’s time for a bounty on the little dears. Coastal Indians eat them with great enjoyment. One of their favorite delicacies is herring eggs dipped in seal oil.
You have federally-protected sea lions eating federally-protected salmon, so the sea lions are trapped by the federal government in order to starve thsm so they don't eat the salmon.
Then a non-federally-protected species (human, no doubt) stops by to put an end to this circular logic and everybody gets their panties in a wad.
No doubt about it, I have lived too long.
Chuckling here. You’ve got to love that.
UPDATE: it turns out the sea lions were not shot, after all.
They now are investigating why they died.
