Clinton: OPEC 'can no longer be a cartel'

Ben Smith 17 minutes ago

Clinton's attacks on oil prices as artificially inflated, Enron-style, keep escalating, and today she appeared to threaten to break up the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

"We're going to go right at OPEC," she said. "They can no longer be a cartel, a monopoly that get together once every couple of months" at a hotel in "some plush place in the world" to set prices, she told a crowd a volunteer fire house in Merrillville.

Clinton has cast herself as a warrior for working people against the oil industry and malicious "speculators," and made that -- along with her push for a gas tax holiday -- central to her closing message in Indiana. It's a potent message, like the attack on "Wall Street money brokers," with deep roots in American politics. It' It's also very hard to figure out what exactly she means by the threat to break OPEC.

Like what power does she believe she would have to do that shy of an all out war?

I did not read it all, but just what authority does the United States have over the laws of the OPEC members? Is the US going to pass a law to stop OPEC and then enforce it? It sounds nice, but it won’t work.

Megalomania knows no bounds.

Oblitherate Iran, break up the oil cartels what can’t she do?

It should be interesting to see the reaction of the cartel to this.

Like what power does she believe she would have to do that...

Like the U.N., she's send an angry letter (but not TOO angry), demanding they take action in four years. And if they don't, then by golly, she'll...

...send another letter. That'll quake 'em in their boots!

If I were an OPEC nation, I’d be shivering in my boots right about now.

It doesn't matter as long as it sounds good. By the time she gets elected the stupid voters won't remember it anyway. Or, at least, that's what she hopes or she can blame it on George Bush just like she did when she promised to bring all those jobs to New York.

Outside of the nuclear Yoko Ono option, I don’t know if even the pull of thousands of U.n. letters could do anything.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is a permanent, intergovernmental Organization, created at the Baghdad Conference on September 10–14, 1960, by Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. The five Founding Members were later joined by nine other Members: Qatar (1961); Indonesia (1962); Socialist Peoples Libyan Arab Jamahiriya (1962); United Arab Emirates (1967); Algeria (1969); Nigeria (1971); Ecuador (1973) – suspended its membership from December 1992-October 2007; Angola (2007) and Gabon (1975–1994). OPEC had its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, in the first five years of its existence. This was moved to Vienna, Austria, on September 1, 1965.

OPEC's objective is to co-ordinate and unify petroleum policies among Member Countries, in order to secure fair and stable prices for petroleum producers; an efficient, economic and regular supply of petroleum to consuming nations; and a fair return on capital to those investing in the industry.

******

Jeeeeeze...since when is Hillary Clinton a 'member' of OPEC?! I don't think she has a say in anything they want to do! She must think she is running for Queen of the World.

Though highly unlikely to ever come to pass, IF we appeared serious in warning the OPEC countries that we would pull all of our military protection umbrella as well as cut off all aid as well as freezing sales of arms, that might just get the Saudis' attention, who after all, are the most powerful member country.

Of course, we broke OPEC stranglehold back in the 70's and could do it again if it weren't for the EnviroNuts and their willing stooges in Congress.

She's morphing into a populist on the right. Ross Perot in a skirt (well, pantsuit), and cankles.

Of course, he came in third.
