Emergency evacuation as Chile volcano spews lava

SANTIAGO, Chile (Reuters) - Lava started to spew from an erupting volcano in southern Chile on Tuesday, authorities said, ordering the immediate evacuation of all remaining residents and journalists from a nearby town.

Chaiten volcano, in Patagonia around 760 miles south of the capital of Santiago, began erupting on Friday, sending a towering plume of ash into the sky that has since coated the surrounding area and reached as far as Argentina.

Fernando Aguila, governor of the affected Palena province, told local radio lava was flowing and said 180 civilians and around 100 troops remained in Chaiten. Local television reported loud groaning sounds emanating from the volcano.

"The situation has changed suddenly," Rodrigo Rojas of the National Emergency Office said in an interview.

“Lava started to spew from an erupting volcano “

Has lava ever came from a non-erupting volcano?

Algore flew down to Chile with a HUGE CORK for that nasty old CO2 spewing volcano (his jet leaving its customary massive carbon footprint)

He was last seen atop the cork passing through 100,000 feet and climbing.

If the rest of us get lucky, he’ll go into orbit — around Mars.

This volcano would have been happily sitting quiet until MANKIND and our GLOBAL WARMING irritated the VOLCANO GOD and now she/he/it/them/GLB is paying MANKIND back....

Coincidentally, as the U.S. continues its slide into socialism, I’ve been thinking Chile might be a nice place to live. That is, if what I’ve been reading about it is true. (Search for “Miracle of Chile”.)

I hope no one is hurt and everything turns out OK.

The globull warmists are wacky enough without you giving them additional crazy ideas. I must ask you to cease and desist.

“Lava started to spew from an erupting volcano “

Whose account will AlGore charge carbon credits for this?

Volcano men ("scientists") say one volcano eruption throws 12 years of US carbon "pollution" equivalent in the atmosphere not counting ashes which float in earths stratosphere for years shading sun rays and changing the ratio of sunlight hitting the earth.

Somebody tell me how we can even compete with volcanos in "climate change" a new buzzword replacing compromised "global warming".

Well, no, but it isn’t redundant. Not all volcanic eruptions involve the ‘spewing’ of lava, sometimes it’s just ash and gas.

This is an historic event, and one which may adversely effect us as well as the people of the southern hemisphere should enough ash be ejected to lead to significant cooling. I lift up the people of Chile in prayer, and I watch with interest to see what happens next...

Re: Wonderful picture of the eruption here:

Whoa! Best read what is posted there! A sample:

"I want to explain a few things about Chaiten. First of all, the last eruption is dated near 10,000 years ago. You may have seen other numbers in the media. They are wrong — or at least I trust the Smithsonian archive more than the media. Second, Chaiten is not a “normal” volcano. It is a crater amid hills. There is no mountain. Chaiten does not have “sides” as this Reuters article says. If you look at the Landsat photo in the Smithsonian archive linked above, you will see only irregular upland, with a crater in the midst. Why is there no mountain? Because on the rare occasions when Chaiten erupts, it ejects straight up like a cannon, with immense force. So far there have apparently been no major pyroclastic collapses of the eruption plume. If there were, the town of Chaiten might be destroyed. It has only been dusted with ash. Apparently the cannon shots end as abruptly as they begin. Very little of the ejecta falls nearby. This is why there is no mountain. Do you see the significance? Chaiten is designed for maximum impact on global climate. Its ash goes straight into the stratosphere."

And: "This morning... there is still a large cloud-like feature sprawled across southern South America. But it is not a cloud. Here is the Code Red advisory from the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC). “Emission continuous.” Dread words. Rare readers, this is a serious event. It comes at a moment when all the climate drivers already are forcing temperatures down. I have repeatedly said the one thing we don’t want to see is a major volcanic eruption. Now we have our eruption. Our potential Little Ice Age looks a lot more certain, and a lot more icy. This may be the event of our lifetimes, changing the world unimaginably."

I am no fan of Algore's Global Warming Crapola by any stretch, but I do believe in the earth having climate change brought about by caldera volcanoes erupting as history has shown. That is what causes me to be concerned about this one!

That... and the thought of the Yellowstone Caldera we have in our own backyard!

When Yellowstone Caldera last erupted ~640 ka, it released ~1,000 km3 of dense rock equivalent (DRE) material, covering a substantial part of North America in up to two metres of debris. By comparison, when Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980, it released ~1.2 km3 (DRE) of ejecta.

Suddenly, I think will go finish planting the garden. This is an event which could send the world’s food supply into a treacherous tailspin...

I pray I’m wrong; but considering the data we are already receiving regarding cooling, it would not take much to push temperatures into a precipitous drop.

And how much has this one spewed? If it doesn’t match the one that erupted in 1815 that caused the year without a summer in 1816 I won’t worry.

Chaiten is a microscopic Caldera compared to Yellowstone. 3km Diameter, Yellowstone is 55 by 72 km.

Not even remotely near the same scale.

I wouldn’t expect even the slightest climate impact from Chaiten.

I doesn’t matter how big the old Caldera is (or was), but how big the magma chamber has grown during the past 10,000 years. Of course, no one knows that answer right now.

Was there any activity prior to the spew?

I didnt see any mention of any as I quickly read your post.

Yes there was prior activity here, but it was over 9,000 years ago, which does not bode well for the residents around the mountain and possible even further away..
