John Gambling, Back at WOR in NYC, Scoffs at Imus
New York Daily News ^ | May 6, 2008 | David Hinckley

Posted on 05/08/2008 7:46:48 AM PDT by Dr. Scarpetta

"We're the only local news/talk station here in NYC in the morning," said John Gambling. Alluding to Imus and WABC's 5 a.m. host Curtis Sliwa, he cracked, "The guy with the cowboy hat and the guy with the beret are going to have to watch their backs."

Gambling said, not for the first time, that he has little use for Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama and that John McCain is "not the candidate I would put together if it were up to me."

Gambling spent the last eight years at WABC (770 AM), after WOR startled him in 2000 by not renewing his contract. In some ways, he suggested yesterday, his return is also startling.

"Who'd a thunk it?" he said, adding several times, "I can't tell you how happy I am to be here."

Imus is another liberal arse.

McPain is his IDEAL candidate ... give you a clue where this pointed head is coming from. Imus is disgusting.

Kuby is a flaming liberal. Curtis I don't mind. He's a conservative and founded the Guardian Angel years ago in NYC. Now the Guardian Angels are a world wide volunteer group to help keep you safe. Personally, I like Curtis.

I sure hope so. He must have signed a huge contract, his “leaving” unfortunately won't be as quick as I would like.

long time listener to 77WABC AM’s programming
and cannot understand why they did what they did.
heard imus one morning mumbling a monologue about whatever and turned off the radio, and turned off it stays. The energy that was once there with curtis & kuby, warner wolf + the open line callers is gone and that station’s morning show is dead.
their loss.

Happy to hear this! Thanks!

Imus really is such a drag. He may have good interviews, but his own self-absorption always gets in the way. I can’t take him for more than a few minutes -— and then he is turned off. Also, I HATE the music interludes! I tune in for news - and it is NEWS that I want.

May Gamblings ratings overtake Imus and make WABC think twice about what they’ve done.

More power to you John!

Imus is brain dead. His show is unlistenable anytime he opens his mouth. He was mildly entertaining when I was a kid, but all of those years of drug use screwed up his brain.

I've noticed that they've kept the title as "The New John Gambling Show" and haven't gone back to "Rambling with Gambling".

Maybe they will after John's been there for a while.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for John Gambling. He’s a gentlemen and a fine host. In the aftermath of 9/11, he said something to the effect that even though he’s a Quaker, you can’t just let people come in and murder 3,000 people with impunity, you have to take them out. I would not have thought less of him had he not said that, but I was profoundly moved by his emotion when he did. It couldn’t have been easy to do, but like most of us, he was aching all over and it caused him to take a hard look at things. I’m glad he’s back on the air.

He was a good morning guy, keeping topics of the day updated, with a dry sense of humor. Imus is nothing but a Howard Stern light, annoying at best. Curtis is...well, Curtis! Well informed most of the time, street smart and entertaining.

It never ceases to amaze me that Imus has an audience.

He sounds like he’s drunk most of the time, he is completely incapable of filling five minutes of air time by himself without having other people around to fill the space, and his brilliant political insight consists of calling people he disagrees with “morons.”

Plus, he has all the charm of a temporary tooth crown.

He ought to refer to his network as MIB (Mediocrity in Broadcasting) — not that he actually has a network.

I just really don’t get his appeal.

Mark Simone... that's right! Thanks, I'll try to remember to tune in. I live in the area where WABC, WCBS and other NYC stations fade out (between Hartford, CT and Springfield, MA), although WFAN comes in fairly well up here. I'll have to remember to stream WABC.

That show - and especially Musicradio 77 "Rewound" - brings back lots of good summertime memories of my youth on the CT and RI shore (where WABC comes in strong), listening to great music and disk jockeys like Dan Ingram, Ron Lundy, and others.

Musicradio 77 WABC

*Ding!* "...and it's now 80 WABC Dee-grees in the City..."

Can't stand John Gambling, he's a Liberal pretending to be conservative to get ratings. His ass kissing of Bafoonberg was nauseating

The only reason he was popular was because he was squeezed between Kurtis & Kuby and Rush. Kind of the way NBC 10 years ago on Thursdays could have put a test screen up between Seinfeld & Friends and ER and still get good ratings.

Good Riddence

“Imus?
The name doesn’t ring a bell.”

I knew nothing about Imus until the “nappy headed” scandal.

I sill would know nothing except that since I moved to Europe I have to get my talk radio via WABC online.

I tried listening to Imus when he came on the air, but I found him to to be a pandering ass. “ He/she is so great and wonderful, I just love him/her to death...blah blah blah.”

I am sure he would kiss any well known ass, as long as they are on the left. His support of McStain does not impress me at all.

Imus has become one enormous commercial for his wife and her greening products.
He’s also become disgustingly, polically correct since his comments about the Rutger’s BB team. I kind of like the new “girl” on his show...Karith? but the black guy Tony is, in my opinion, just there because of his color. He adds 0 to the show.

Excellent-thanks for the update. Gambling is very good. Can’t stand Imus or Sliwa. At least Kuby is gone.

Imus is an ass-kissing bore, although he is not a liberal as some Freepers contend. (He's more Ron Paul populist with an over-sized an ego.) IMO Sliwa/Kuby followed by John Gambling were the best 6 hours of non-syndicated talk radio. Yes, Kuby is a lib (his "mommy is a commie"), but I am not so insecure in my political beliefs to fear a few hours of exposure to leftest ideology, particularly when his co-host was the right of center, street-smart city boy named Curtis Sliwa. The bottom line is that Ron Kuby is one of the few liberals who can make liberalism entertaining, and while I nearly always disagreed with him, I did recognize and appreciate his ability to simplify complicated legal and constitutional principles for the masses. And then there is John Gambling, who in my opinion is one of the most underrated talk radio hosts in the tri-state region. Given the choice between Imus and Gambling, I'm thrilled that he is back on air.

I agree that John Gambling is the class of the NYC morning talk show hosts. Never had much use for Imus, and less so after his chastening experience of being fired by Barak Obama. Before he was always pushing the borders of acceptability, and would make me laugh in spite of myself if I listened. Now, even though now he's on the station I default to, he doesn't even suck me in accidentally. And I can only take so much of Curtis Sliwa, just because. Hey, I even tune out Rush late in his program, sometimes.

So if I'm listening in the morning it will most likely be Gambling on WOR.

Gambling does have class and seems to lead a totally normal life. He avoids the spotlight. I don't know why some people on this thread think he's a liberal.
