if I remember correctly, the National Enquirer broke the Monica Lewinsky story. Everybody said ‘oh, it’s just the Enquirer,’ but it turned out to be true.
The Enquirer broke the story about Belushi. The press was letting it pass as an OD, but Belushi was nearly comatose, and a girlfiend gave him a speedball. Of course, Belushi was going to die from an OD at some point, anyway, kind of like Morrison, Joplin, Hendrix, Farley and River Phoenix.
I thought Drudge broke that story?
The NE also broke important stories related to Hillary Clinton and Jesse Jackson a few years back. Stories that then ran the next day in outlets like the NY Times and Washington Post as “the National Enquirer reported yesterday that . . . “. The NE has a certain advantage over “legitimate” media outlets in that it’s perfectly willing to shell out cash for information. The slimy associates of slimy public figures see no reason to yammer to a “legitimate” media outlet for free when they can get paid to yammer to the NE.
They also broke many details on the OJ murders before anyone else. When you throw money at something it can pay off.
