Furman University professors, students sign statement opposing Bush visit

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - More than 200 students and faculty members at Furman University have signed a statement protesting President Bush's visit to speak at the South Carolina school's commencement later this month.

Bush is scheduled to speak at Furman's graduation ceremonies May 31.

The 222 co-signers say in a statement on the school's Web site that they object to the president's visit for several reasons, including the war in Iraq. They also cite the administration's "obstructing progress on reducing greenhouse gases while favoring billions in tax breaks and subsidies to oil companies that are earning record profits."

English professor Robin Visel says a lecture series about various Bush administration policies is planned before Bush comes to the Greenville school.

Those promoting a ‘political society’ have so many ‘motivating factors’!

I wish these college students would live in a reality based world!

Good Lord, I thought Furman was a fairly decent school.

Are there ANY colleges in this country that aren't liberal indoctrination cesspools anymore???

Yeah, good school too. But the only place that Bush will be welcomed in Greenville is about 4 miles to the west of FU--Bob Jones University.

Yeah, yeah. He differs from their pet causes so he must be silenced. At some point these children will have to encounter the real world...unless they stay in academia. Idiots.

This is my wife’s alma mater...and it’s a private Baptist school, as well. Not somewhere I’d expect this sort of buffoonery to happen.

It *is* a good school, that’s what’s galling about stuff like this. It’s annoying to see this kind of pap invade the County Club of the South. (I shudder to think how much they spend on the landscaping there...the entire campus is just gorgeous.)

Some liberal/radical/anarchist types just hate Bush, and the reasons mentioned sound convincing to themselves.

But, if Bush was in favor of doing whatever it is we’re supposed to do to fight global warming, if he wanted to go after the oil companies as much as Hillary does, and if he had already started withdrawing from Iraq, they would move on to other reasons to oppose him, such as:

gays in the military
gay marriage
stem cell research

appointing Roberts and Alito, who helped form the majority upholiding the ban on partial birth abortion

alleged violations of human rights at Guantanamo

alleged illegal surveillance of American citizens through the wiretapping/surveillance program

alleged voting irregularities in the 2000 election, so in the end, Bush never should have been president in the first place, according to these people.

See, the list of things to oppose Bush on are endless. If he was in agreement with them on the issues cited, they simply would have moved on to other reasons to oppose a president visiting their university.

I’ve always wondered about this... If someone asked me to sign a petition like this and I tore it up, that’d be free speech, right?

One that I know of. Hillsdale College in Michigan. They don't take a penny of government money.

More than 200 students and faculty are protesting the President’s visit?
WOW!!!

Accoding to Wiki..., there are 272 faculty members, 525 graduate students, and approx. 2550 undergrades.
220/3347=6.6%
Only 6.6% with Bush-derangement syndrone?
I’ll take it!

Perhaps the students should be shown a petition by real Americans saying we oppose their efforts to stifle free and open speech. But then, these loons would gladly see conservatives silenced.
