"It's conceivable that there are those in the Arab world who say to themselves, 'This is a guy who spent some time in the Muslim world, has a middle name of Hussein and appears more worldly and has called for talks with people, and so he's not going to be engaging in the same sort of cowboy diplomacy as George Bush,'" Obama said in an interview with The Atlantic.
"That's a perfectly legitimate perception as long as they're not confused about my unyielding support for Israel's security," Obama said.
Last month, Ahmed Yousef, a political adviser to the militant Palestinian group, told an interviewer on WABC radio that "We like Mr. Obama" and "we hope that he will win the election."
Yousef's comments sparked intense criticism from John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, who recently vowed to be "Hamas' worst nightmare."
"If Sen. Obama is favored by Hamas, I think people can make judgments accordingly," McCain said.
In the magazine interview, Obama insisted his position on Hamas is "indistinguishable" from the positions McCain or Democratic rival Hillary Clinton have taken. He said Hamas is a terrorist organization and should be condemned.
Also in the interview, Obama rejected former President Jimmy Carter's suggestion that Israel resembles an apartheid state.
"I strongly reject that characterization," he said. "It's emotionally loaded, historically inaccurate and it's not what I believe."
Obama also said Israeli settlements on the West Bank "at this juncture are not helpful."

Since he raises it as a political asset, Obama's time spent in the Muslim world, and his affection for Muslims, is now a campaign issue.
I understand why Hamas prefers him too.
What else? Red Brigades? Sundera Luminoso?
And he has campaigned in the 57 (Islamic) States!
How exactly can Hamas be for him? It must either be the appeasement he offers and/or the propaganda coup of having an muslim apostate as POTUS.
It’s easy to understand muslims when you are one.
Nobama will get the U.N. to smother’em with resolutions. And, if that doesn’t work, he’ll challenge’em to a purse fight.
One problem: Obama's talking about terrorists, so let me word this correctly:
It's conceivable that terrorists in the Arab world who say to themselves, 'This is a guy who spent some time in the Muslim world, has a middle name of Hussein and appears more worldly and has called for talks with all of our supporters, and so he's not going to be engaging in the same sort of cowboy diplomacy as George Bush
That's a perfectly legitimate perception as long as they're not confused about my unyielding support for Israel's security
Oh Really!!!
HOW IN THE HELL DID BARRY GET THIS FAR?
Barack Obama ‘understands’ Hamas view ....
All along, I thought they just wanted us dead.
Silly me.
He's tall, thin, black, and talks real purty.
Why is it okay for him to say this, but we can't mention it without being accused of being something-ist. (Can't say racist; Islam isn't a race.)
I thought Obama said that we were not allowed to use his middle name, that it was xenophobic to do so.
Obama Flip Flop
As was said when this first became an issue, it’s like having the middle name “Hitler”. Jerry Hitler Thomas would want to supress the use of his middle name too. But Obama and others tell us that we were WRONG to go to war against Saddam HUSSEIN.
So doesn’t having the middle name HUSSEIN make Obama more of a victim than a “tyrant”?
His use of the term “cowboy diplomacy” is emblematic of a juvenile mind at work.
No it isn't. It's a DEM talking point, and political shorthand with a distinct meaning anyone who follows politics understands.
Thank you, now with Bob Barr in the race, He might win, so you can do TERRORIST activies around the GLOBE - not only in LEBANON!!
Yousef's comments sparked intense criticism from John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, who recently vowed to be "Hamas' worst nightmare."
Do you so-called CONSERVATIVE LP BobBarr supporters UNDERSTAND? McCain will keep us safe. Do you want to be worried about a bomb going off in a MALL? I sure don't!!
He’s also one ugly dude.
If it's Dem, then how cn you deny that it's a juvenile mind t work??
... and political shorthand with a distinct meaning anyone who follows politics understands.
Not to worry -- most of us can understand juvenile twaddle, regardless of its idiocy.
One argument is that Obama will be more hated than any other President - why? Because in Islam the crime for heresy/conversion to Christinity is worse than simply being a “dhimmi.” Obama’s father was a converted Muslim, and technically, from his time in Indonesia, Obama is also.
