Nixon resigned when his support in the Senate faded away.

One article referred to the GOP’s 12 year “stranglehold” on the House. Bad reporting, as usual. Their hold on power was always rather tenuous. They could never hope to get the 2-1 majorities like the Dems had for so much of the 20th century. Pretty sad really. Not only did the leadership fail but I think we can blame the media for a lot of the negative feelings about Republicans. This has always cost them a lot of popular support.

His support in the Senate faded away because he became indefensible.

The American people need to bend over and kiss their butts goodbye along with their freedom, their futures, and their incomes. It’s toilet bowl time and it ain’t gonna be pretty. Our enemies are waiting and laughing.

“But go ahead, blame the most conservative president...”

Open borders, massive increases in deficit spending, new entitlement programs, free trade, and mishandling the early stages of the Iraq War. That’s conservative? Bush is not blameless.

Not a surprise at all, and it shows how Haley Barbour misjudged the MS political climate so soon after his own victory.

What does the GOP stand for right now. I called this two years ago. The GOP has to have a plan. I knew this would be a tough year when after 2006, the house kept Boehner and Blunt in charge instead of going with Pence and Shadegg and reform. WTF was DC thinking? Congress was broke in the opinion of the American People. Instead of real change, we get a bunch of yesmen. Nobody likes a yesman.

I blame this on Blunt and Boehner. The US House hasn't had any real leaders since Dick Armey retired.

“Our enemies are waiting and laughing.”

And the Democrats don’t care as long as they seize power. And the Middle doesn’t care as long as they make the self-important decision to shift power.

"Thank you for Roberts and Alito but man what a price we have payed for his presidency."

Bush has been far worse for the Republicans than Clinton was for the dems. Roberts, Alito, and tax cuts are about the only thing Bush has done right. The jury is still out on the war front.

Oh crap, I never saw that thread. I did search for Childers in the title.

I agree. This is Major League Disaster.

They could end up with 60+ Senators and taking away opportunity to fillibuster.

They may end up with 280 members in Congress at this pace.

The economy sucks right now. We never had $4.00 gallon gas. The economy sucks because of that alone, let alone the job market which is uneasy at best. People see the gas costs every day and live it. Add in the increased in costs in goods across the country we are used to taking for granted and it is big trouble.

Now that’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard all week. You have no reason to believe that a President McCain will nominate conservative Justices. And if his past record is any indication, he won’t. Mr. Go-Along-To-Get-Along will nominate whomever he things will make it though a Senate confimation without a fuss.

Betweeen the economic slowdown, gas prices, and Iraq, I have a feeling the Dems will maintain 60-65% of congress.

Someone else will have to take that opening, because I have to turn in- big day at work tommorrow.

I’d wish happy dreams, but I can’t imagine that happening after tonight.

His decline started the day Terri Schiavo was murdered — March 31, 2005.

Easily the most damaging item to Bush, Republicans, and conservatives have been this war. The mismanagement has been colossal. Followed in distance by our “miserable” 5% unemploymed economy, Katrina, and a smattering of other issues to small to bother with (i.e. death by a thousand paper cuts).

They can still avert major league disaster and make it just an ass kicking, but I don’t think they are smart enough to do so because there a horrific case of the Peter Principle going on in DC.
