WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he thought more visits to Iran by private American citizens might help bridge differences between the two countries.

But Gates, who in 2004 advocated greater diplomatic engagement with Iran, said Wednesday he believed it would not be useful now to negotiate with the government headed by President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad.

"We need to figure out a way to develop some leverage with the Iranians and then sit down and talk with them," he said in a talk at the American Academy of Diplomacy, referring to general US relations with Tehran.

“There are actually a fair number of Iranians that come to the United States to visit,” he said.

“We ought to increase the flow going the other way, not of Iranians but of Americans, and that may be one way of creating some space perhaps over some period of time.”

Now THAT is f***ing brain DEAD!
Jesus in a taxi, is every republican going to be a leftist kook from now on??

Jeez. I was just thinking recently that Gates had actually done a very nice job as SecDef. While I am a Rummy fan, it seemed like Gates had fit the current need. Now I have to rethink.

What don’t people get? You can’t coddle or negotiate with tyrants.

Lets send our infrastructure into N. Korea while we’re at it. Hey, it’s all good. We’re bad. Yes. I’ll go sit in a corner now.

"If there is going to be a discussion then they need something, too," he said. "We can't go to a discussion and be completely the 'demandeur' with them not feeling they do not need anything from us."

Well far be it from me to be a demandeur(That's French right?) but tell me einstein, just what is it that these a-holes want from us? And want bad enough to give up their nuke program, which is basically the main thing we want from them?

I think Gates spent too much time as a college prez'dint down Texas way. Perhaps he thinks this is all just a big meeting of the faculty senate.

Gates is a one step-forward, two-steps backwards Sec. of Defense. Give me Rummie. At least he had balls and knew how to use power.

Gates in weak, just like Obama.

The constituencies who dampen the US will to fight will regret the policies that they’re pushing, IMO. I have seen sincere sympathy in the eyes of the enemy for low-income Americans. We saw what the enemy has in mind for higher-income Americans on one September 11th.

Dear Boss and US Leaders:

My American family of little means has the will to fight for your lives and freedom. We also have the moral integrity to prevent the enemy from using our social activities as war propaganda for his slaves. Why don’t you?
