McCain Exceptionalism
New York Times ^ | 5/19/08 | William Kristol

Posted on 05/19/2008 1:22:17 AM PDT by MartinaMisc

Last Tuesday, Republicans lost another Congressional seat in a special election — their third such defeat in two months. On Wednesday I received an acerbic e-mail message from a disgusted young G.O.P. loyalist: “I just have to say that Republicans are a dumb party that chooses stupid candidates. With the exception of McCain.” Who says the young lack wisdom? In fact, Republican hopes of denying Democrats complete control of the federal government for the next couple of years may rest on the promise of “McCain exceptionalism.”

The Republican Party is clearly in bad shape — trailing by double digits in party preference among the electorate, very likely to lose House and Senate seats in the fall. But John McCain — despite a rather haphazard campaign so far lacking in thematic coherence — is doing pretty well. In two public tracking polls, by Gallup and Rasmussen, he’s basically even with Barack Obama; other polls have him slightly behind.

What’s more, three developments this past week were promising for McCain — or what amounts to pretty much the same thing, problematic for Obama.

1. On Tuesday night, while the G.O.P. Congressional candidate was losing in a Mississippi district George Bush carried in 2004 by 25 points, Barack Obama was being trounced in the West Virginia Democratic primary — by 41 points. I can’t find a single recent instance of a candidate who ultimately became his party’s nominee losing a primary by this kind of margin. The crucial swing states of Ohio and Pennsylvania (whose primaries Obama also lost to Hillary Clinton) have a fair number of West Virginia-type working-class, culturally conservative voters. The Obama campaign can’t be confident about his prospects there in the fall.

Kristol hasn’t taken a couple big factors into account:

Conservatives miffed at McCain...some who hate him so much they’ll let the Obamanation in the WH.

The LameStream Media, focused on the Obamanation vs. Hitlery battle, has not turned its full guns of bias against the Republican nominee. Once it does, McCain will be fighting two opponents—opponents he keeps saying he “respects” and want to give “straight talk” to. But they won’t play nice.

I take comfort knowing God is sovereign, and despite the horrid lack of conservative leadership now, a day is coming when people will wake up and our leaders will be responsible Constitutionalists instead of pandering socialists.

Oh yeah! Pure genius.

Forget the fact that the GOP has destroyed itself. Forget that there is NO conservative candidate for president.

That's like saying, "Oh man, it's a good thing I'm about to cut off my foot. It could have been my whole leg."

There is still no cohesive national agenda for the GOP on a national level. While the liberals have the games of 'change' and 'get us out of Iraq', etc, the GOP presents a conflicted viewpoint (even though polls indicate the electorate is quite clear) on illegal immigration, have yet to produce anything other than spending like drunken sailors with four hours of leave left, aren't even making a stand on ANWAR - just what is a GOP congress supposed to accomplish? What is a President McCain going to accomplish?

McCain will likely win in November but the GOP will likely continue to lose seats until they get around to presenting a clear set of goals to get elected.

The premise is flawed from the beginning in this article. The thing that makes McCain an exception from being a “stoopid candidate,” according to the author, is the presumption that he will be able to maintain or gain power.

Truth is that the Republican party’s esteemed candidate is simply the leader and forerunner of the “stoopid candidates,” and just as much, if not more, of a reason that I, and many conservatives like me, have withheld our money and votes from the party in recent years.

Could be that it doesn’t particularly matter “what” the House Republicans have to say, the last 4 GWB years along with House scandals have combined to make it a tough year for the REpublican Party.

But what Kristol suggests, abandon Conservatism for some sort of Democrat Lite platform is simply not workable, but not surprising that Kristol would suggest such a thing.

God raises the nations up and dashes them down. It's not at all clear that there will be a recognizable US in 50 years. The decline and fall of Western Civilization is well-advanced and 2008 could be the year that marks the beginning of the end in the history books. An Obama presidency coupled with a large democrat majority will make totalitarian changes that are near impossible to undo, as will a McCain administration with a large democrat majority.

It's not necessarily possible for a nation to recover from repeated body blows. We have managed to keep staggering along despite the New Deal, the Great Society, and whatever you call the Carter administration, and Bush 1 and 2. Eventually though, the damage is too great. I'm thinking we're about there.

The best thing that could happen if McCain were to lose in the fall. Then the Democrats' unified rule of the federal government will bring about a disaster because they can't help themselves. It would lay the groundwork for a conservative resurgence in 2010 and 2012.

"There is still no cohesive national agenda for the GOP"

Because the GOP is split, or more accurately, fractured.

For example:
The economic elitists and the cultural populists are in conflict.
The moderate right and far right are in conflict
The paleos and neos are in conflict
The South and inland West are in conflict

As wrong as it is to think like this, I am confident that McCain will choose someone like Joe Lieberman as his V.P., just to show how far across the aisle he wants to go.(big whoop) What a complete embarrassment that will be and the Republican turnout in November will be the lowest in U.S. history. I can’t believe I live in a country where this is even remotely possible. Hey John, when the Rats start beating you down in the general election, what are you going to do, Play Nice and let the jr senator walk all over you? Mmmm Hmmm, I can’t wait to see what you’ll do then. LOL

Joe Liberman is more valuable on the Senate floor. With the further help of Lindsey Grahm, McCain will control the Senate.

Pardon me if I laugh, Willie. I remember that sick, constipated look on your face when you realized the primary tallies looked so poor for McCain.
