Obama: Iran is Just a Tiny Country
Town Hall ^ | 5/19/08 | Amanda Carpenter

Likely Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama told supporters Iran is just a “tiny” country at a campaign stop in Oregon Sunday evening.

"Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union. They don't pose a serious threat to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us,” Obama said.

Obama’s rivals, including his fellow Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton, have criticized Obama for his willing to meet with Iran, a state sponsor of terrorism.

Presumptive GOP presidential nominee John McCain issued a strong retort to Obama's assessment at a stop in Chicago on Monday. "The biggest national security challenge the United States currently faces is keeping nuclear material out of the hands of terrorists," McCain said. "Should Iran acquire nuclear weapons, that danger would become very dire, indeed. They might not be a superpower, but the threat the Government of Iran poses is anything but "'tiny.'"

Combative exchanges between Obama and McCain over negotiations with Iran dominated the media’s coverage of the 2008 election last week. From the podium of the National Rifle Association’s national conference McCain said, “I have some news for Senator Obama: Talking, not even with soaring rhetoric, in unconditional meetings with the man who calls Israel a 'stinking corpse' and arms terrorists who kill Americans will not convince Iran to give up its nuclear program.

“It is reckless to suggest that unconditional meetings will advance our interests," McCain said.

Obama seemed to brush off these concerns about Iran’s threats while campaigning in Oregon. “Iran, they spend 1/100th of what we spend on the military. If Iran ever tried to pose a serious threat to us, they wouldn't stand a chance,” Obama said.

Iran is three times the size of France and five times the size of Germany. Yeah, it’s a tiny country and the US has 57 states.

Well, let's look at history, recent history, Vietnam was a tiny country, North Korea was a tiny country and Germany was very small compared to the rest of the world it tried to enslave(and came close to doing so). Had they used their heads a little better, or killed off Hitler and took over the military, they would have succeeded in beating Russia and if they had it would have been a different world today. The size of a country matters not, it is their ability to wage war that counts and if Iran, or Venezuela, come up with nukes it won't matter how big they are.

The main threat at this time is to Israel but I guess he doesn't give a rat's a** for the Israelis. What a dumb a** and what a bunch of dumb a**es the libs are for listening to this idiot.

Iran is more than twice the size of Texas, has a larger population than the UK or Germany or France or Italy, and has a GDP per capita higher than the Soviet Union's ever was.

Iran has more people and more wealth than Germany had in 1939.

They may be tiny, but their leadership is far more insane. Therefore, I’d say they are as big a threat as the USSR ever was - probably more so.

Israel which might respond by destroying the rest of the Middle East with its nukes.

I don't see Israel doing that unless they plan on living underground for a few thousand years.

Germany and Japan were tiny countries during WWII.

Pretty much all the wars we ever fought in this nation have been against "tiny" countries: England, Spain, Mexico, North Korea, North Vietnam, Iraq...

Does BHO think this makes the Revolutionary War and all the other wars in which our valiant troops gave the last full measure of devotion any less important?

And then he said that Kennedy got Khrushchev to get the missiles out of Cuba by negotiation. Yea and the Strategic Air Command at Def Con 2. Silly Obambi.

Well it depends on your definition of negotiation, if telling the Soviets to remove the missiles or get blown to he** is negotiating then I guess JFK negotiated. I call it an ultimatum. The idiots that follow Obama though will believe the lies he tells them. I hope McCain or Bush call him on this one.

This guy is absolutely nuts. I guess he never heard of JAPAN with that pesky little attack on December 7, 1941.

Apparently, this is reaching into the realm where “you can’t make this stuff up”.

I know the campaign trail has been a non-stop marathon since probably last December, but Ozombi is getting close to losing it altogether to radical beliefs. All the “libertion theology”, the collected Kool-Aid drinkers, the twisted logic in tying these diverse elements together, and the rock-star atmosphere, all conspire to either carry a wave that will swamp the national government, or turn away and leave a huge mud flat, with millions of dazed people in its wake.

Germany is a tiny country too. About the size of Oregon.
Remember what they did back in the 30s and 40s?

A country’s danger is not measured by it’s geographical size. I can’t believe how stupid this man is, or is it that he thinks most Americans are stupid? Maybe most Americans are that stupid. Al Gore won the popular vote.

We are in for a world of hurt if the man wins the presidency.

“Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union. They don’t pose a serious threat to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us,” Obama said.

Uh, Barry, you forget that the leadership of the Soviet Union, unlike the leadership of Iran, had no death wish!

Your sophomoric grasp of foreign policy and geo-political crisis points is truly dangerous for the United States of America.

No one can guarantee that once nuclear war is started somewhere that it wouldn’t cause a chain reaction worldwide.

WWI and Duke Ferdinand are a great example...

obama thinks they are tiny to us because he thinks there are more than 57 states in our union

the man is a complete moran who has no knowledge about the world and is backed up with the most clueless voters this coiuntry has ever produced

If a case was to be made about raising the voting age then this is it

Until you pay taxes and get in the real world then you cannot have a say in how this country should be directed
