WASHINGTON - What a difference a nomination makes.
Now that he's wrapped up the Republican nomination for president, Sen. John McCain has decided to attend the annual convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in Cincinnati in July. A year ago when he was just one of a pack of GOP contenders, he turned down the civil rights group's invitation.
McCain disclosed his plans in an interview with the African-American publication Essence, which was released Tuesday. Asked how he might reach out to the black community, McCain replied that he would "go to places and venues that would allow me to continue a dialogue with the African-American community. I will go to the NAACP convention."
McCain noted that he "talked about the need to include 'forgotten Americans'" during a visit he recently made to the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., where Alabama state troopers and local sheriffs deputies stormed and beat 800 blacks and whites marching for voting rights on March 7, 1965.
All eight Democratic presidential candidates but only one of the 10 Republican candidates, Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo, addressed the NAACP's 98th annual convention in Detroit last July. NAACP spokesman Richard McIntire said all presidential candidates were invited.
With any luck, he might qualify as our second black president!

As long as he doesn’t say “You people” he’ll be fine.........
“appeasement”
He’s stayed at the Hanoi Hilton. This will be a piece of cake. He won’t get any traction there, but he has to go.
Panderfest!!!
Good, I am glad he is going.
Most of the GOP candidates have been out to lunch by skipping these events. Go there and make your case. Take your lumps if you have to. Be a man - it won’t kill you!
Going through the motions but if Obama heads up the ticket I don’t see McCain pulling more than the usual 10%. Has anyone ever determined a way to identify the 10%? Just registered Republicans?
Re: McCain talked about the need to include ‘forgotten Americans.....’
For a second there I thought he meant Conservative Republicans.
I think Boyce Watkins of Syracuse University would call them "happy negroes".
Because that worked out so well for Bush. With Obama on the ticket why even bother?
Besides that, it is important to show what you believe and why you believe it. You may make a conversion or two, but, more importantly, you reduce the animosity that avoidance and anonymity induces.
I wonder how fast “Ace” will sell us out?
So, you’re saying there might be a problem if he says “typical black person”?
Will be fun to watch the different receptions McCain gets compared to Obamma.
... because it 'locks in' the nomination for Obama? Seriously, the Democrats wouldn't consider shafting Obama if McCain makes his case to the NCAAP before-the-fact. Everything that McCain has done indicates that he prefers to run against Obama.
So what? If he becomes president 66% of his citizens will be white. Is he going to address white specific issues?
Why bother. Hussein will get 100% of their votes.
