Sun screen lotion threatens coral: study

PARIS (AFP) - Sun screen lotions used by beach-going tourists worldwide are a major cause of coral bleaching, according to a new study commissioned by the European Commission.

In experiments, the cream-based ultra-violet (UV) filters -- used to protect skin from the harmful effects of sun exposure -- caused bleaching of coral reefs even in small quantities, the study found.

Coral reefs are among the most biologically productive and diverse of ecosystems, and directly sustain half a billion people. But some 60 percent of these reef systems are threatened by a deadly combination of climate change, industrial pollution and excess UV radiation.

All of you who will contract skin cancer once sunscreens are pulled from the market can take heart....you're helping the planet.

They really should just publish a story titled, “Everything man does screws up the environment” and be done with it so we don’t have to read these stories anymore.

I knew climate change would be in there. Plus, global warming->hot->more lotion->dead coral. See, anyone can play 6 degrees of global warming and be a scientician.

Interesting to see this because I have my own theory that sunscreens confuse or attract sharks to bathers/surfers.

I was down in St. Thomas and had put sunscreen on then walked out into the water about waist height. I noticed a large perch shaped fish pretty close to me, next thing there was about 6 real close watching me and enjoying the grease coming off my legs. Needless to say I decided to go back to shore.

The solution to this is to pop a 15MT nuke over it and 50 years later, the crater will be full of corals living fat and sassy. (Bravo crater, Bikini Atoll)

(Probably because no people will go near the place in the interim.)

“An estimated 4,000 to 6,000 tonnes of sunscreen are released annually in reef areas,”

Experts - Everything Man Does Screws Up The Environment

WASHINGTON (AP) -- In a final report of the 15 environmental protection organizations and agencies, experts have released data showing that "everything" humans do causes harm to the environment. Things as simple as walking, using the bathroom, and breathing have been targeted in the study, to be released later today.

"We have slowly become aware of our impact on Mother Earth," said one of the study's 12 main authors, "but now we are certain that there really isn't anything we can do that will not harm her."

The 250 page report lists among other things, formerly environmentally friendly activities such as planting trees, recycling, and taking public transit as environmentally harmful. "Even the slightest movement that people make affects weather patterns that could potentially destroy fragile habitats on the other side of the globe," said one of the leading members of the environmental group who commissioned the study.

For those who believe that killing themselves is the ultimate good for the environment, the study disagrees. In a draft obtained by AP reporters, the study reads that killing oneself has an impact greater than "20,000 SUV-miles", a measure coined by the study's author.

Ironically, the final conclusion from the draft copy recommends that humanity "eliminate efforts to stabilize current environmental conditions" and that we must accept "large changes in habitats and climate measurements" in the future. Several study commissioners told the AP that the conclusions may be edited in the final report.

Doesn’t excess sunscreen actually help with that last one? Slather on some lotion for the coral!
