Jessica Lange compares Iraq to Vietnam in Sarah Lawrence graduation speech

YONKERS - During a Sarah Lawrence College graduation speech she apologetically admitted was filled with "random" thoughts in lieu of a theme, Oscar-winning actress Jessica Lange received thunderous applause from students after comparing America's troubled role in Iraq with its troubled role in Vietnam when she was their age.

"History repeats itself," she told them today, repeatedly tucking her messy blonde hair behind her ears. "It is a heavy burden to inherit."

Lange, whose daughter Hannah Jane Shepard was among the 435 seniors and graduate students in black caps and gowns at the liberal arts college's 79th commencement, urged the students to "make a better world ... to educate, to heal, to entertain, to illuminate."

Along the way, they should also remain open to random possibilities, she added, such as the unexpected invitations that took her from a Midwestern college art class to a Parisian mime school to a Hollywood screen test, all within six years.

Student, faculty and alumni speakers expressed similar sentiments, asking the small class to maintain a balance between social responsibility and silliness, nonconformity and community-building.

During the ceremony, the seniors presented their new alma mater with $168,000 for future scholarships - the largest class gift in a decade.

I remember Jessica Lange’s early review of her work in King Kong. She was called. “Eva Marie Saint on Spanish Fly”. She never got better, but she did get older.

Hollywood is filled with talentless fake blondes who make a few movies & fade into oblivion. So technically she’s right about that. History does repeat itself. Most of the time these people just go away & you never hear from them again. Looking forward to Jessie’s history repeating follow-through on that one.

I don’t think she’s capable of either.

I guess she’s branching out from her former days as Congress’s expert witness on on agricultural matters.

We had Leonard Pitts give the commencement at the college here in my town - they’re sure scraping the barrel...

She is right about a few things in that comparison. We have one every major battle and the left still thinks we are losing. They are will now as then to let the bad guys win. Fortunately this time most of the sheeple have not bought their defeatist attitude.

“I am think about. Maybe I no do. But I tell-a you what ingenuity we plan and you tell me what you think. Kong-a lay dead, and — how you say — scientist come and take apart, and Kong come like Frunkensteen — you know Frunkensteen — and he come crazy bad. He kill everyone. And Dwan (Jessica Lange) is now a big-a time movie star and she say, ‘Hey, Kong, remember me?’ She jumps in his hand, he picks her up, put her to his face, smile and then . . . womp, he eat her. You like, Mary?”

— Dino de Laurentiis, interviewed by Mary Murphy.

I think bad plastic surgery got Jessica. She had beautiful bone structure, but it looks like surgery ruined it. Feh on her Iraq/Vietnam comments too.

She did not age very well. She is in her 50’s. I know lots of beautiful women that are her age and look much better. My mom was gorgeous at that age.

The legacy of Vietnam was not defeating the communists who killed tens of thousands, placed millions into reeducation camps, and caused millions more to flee the country as boat people and refugees. Vietnam remains oppressed by the communists to this very day.

We don't want to repeat that mistake in Iraq. And from a geopolitical perspective, Iraq is far more important to us strategically than Vietnam.

Jessica Lange compares Iraq to Vietnam

I would support the comparison. In the Vietnam conflict the media and congress partnered in assuring our defeat. The same thing has been happening in Iraq. The media and congress are doing the job of our enemies to assure our defeat.
