ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Pioneering rapper Ricky "Slick Rick" Walters, who spent more than five years in prison on a 1991 attempted murder conviction and faced threats of deportation years after rehabilitating his life, was granted a full and unconditional pardon Friday by New York Gov. David Paterson.

Walters, 43, has been under threat of being sent back to his native United Kingdom, although he has lived in the United States since he was a child. In a statement, he expressed gratitude to Paterson and his lawyers, and hoped that he could finally put the turmoil behind him.

"This has been a long and difficult road and I am happy for this to be settled once and for all," Walters said. "I look forward to enjoying this time with my family and friends and to continue leading an honest and productive life."

In announcing the decision, Paterson noted Walters' commitment to helping young people.

The eye patch-wearing star behind '80s rap classics like "La-Di-Da-Di" and "Children's Story" was a successful rapper when he was convicted of shooting his cousin and another man in 1991. Both survived.

Although he had completed probation requirements in the attempted murder case and resumed his musical career, he was arrested again in June 2002. Immigration agents stopped him after he returned to Miami from a weeklong Caribbean cruise where he was a featured performer.

The arrest was on a 1997 Immigration and Naturalization Service warrant that had not been pursued earlier, and he spent 17 months in jail, despite calls for Walters' release from such luminaries as the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Will Smith and Chris Rock.

Anybody who wasn’t born in this country who commits a crime as serious as murder or attempted murder should be deported. I don’t care if they’re naturalized. In fact, if you are naturalized, you’re automatically forfeiting your citizenship oath when you commit a serious crime.

Patterson was unexpectedly sobered up from endless drugging, partying, whoring, and obscurity to be a crooked, utterly incompetent Governor.

New York is so screwed.

Paterson’s barely in office two months, and his biggest priority is pardoning a black rapper and would-be murderer? Oh wait, I get it: “Rick’s characteristic eyepatch was acquired after being blinded in the right eye by broken glass as an infant.” It’s the old sympathy pardon. One blind guy pardoning another blind guy.

Makes me wonder what this guy has on Paterson. Maybe they knew each other in New York during Paterson’s days as a State Senator representing the Harlem and Upper West Side districts. The time frame works.

We are seeing the HABOP (Help A Brother Out Program) at it’s finest moment.

I wonder how much long green Bro. Patterson stuffed in his ice-box for dis heres pardon?

A blind fool will always play the role of a blind fool in political office New York, New York.

Would a white country music performer from New Zealand get the same treatment?

"Hey young world!"

Flashback to childhood: eating a lemon ice while my 15 YO neigbor was playing Slick Rick on his Panasonic. It was rather uptight compared to the hiphop I had heard but still interesting.

Slick Rick, like the boy named Sue, became "tough" because kids in his school near Co-Op City (Boogie Down, aka the Bronx) used to challenge him to fights because of his "faggot accent."

Hehehe... Guarantee I wouldn’t get a pardon for the those two, perhaps a parade in some places.

It seems it makes a difference if you only shoot your relatives though.

Looks like he turned his life around and has been doing community outreach to help persuade kids away from violence.

Also, the guy is a brilliant artist and one of rap's pioneers from the 80s. His songs even back then were pretty positive. "Bedtime story" was a morality tale warning against taking the criminal path.

I don’t follow that industry much at all unless it is hearing about the shootings and lyrics that offend everyone.

I found it interesting that a woman who escaped prison on a life sentence for drug possession a few weeks ago has lived a strait up normal life, husband, kids, no arrests, the works gets thrown back in prison 30 years later.

This guy shoots two people and he gets a pardon from the governor, it doesn’t seem that justice is blind anymore. (no pun intended there...)

No, probably a case of brother helping brother in spite of the laws and red tape we normal folks have to fight through.
