FORMER US president Jimmy Carter has said Israel holds at least 150 nuclear weapons, the first time a US president has publicly acknowledged the Jewish state's atomic arsenal.
Asked at a news conference at Wales' Hay literary festival yesterday how a future US president should deal with the Iranian nuclear threat, Mr Carter put the risk in context by listing atomic weapons held globally.
"The US has more than 12,000 nuclear weapons, the Soviet Union (Russia) has about the same, Great Britain and France have several hundred, and Israel has 150 or more. We have a phalanx of enormous weaponry ... not only of enormous weaponry but of rockets to deliver those missiles on a pinpoint accuracy target," he said, according to a transcript of his remarks.
While the existence of Israeli nuclear weapons is widely assumed, Israeli officials have never admitted their existence and US officials have stuck to that line in public for years.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner said Washington should talk directly to Tehran to persuade it to drop its nuclear ambitions.
Years of US policy, including sanctions and a debate about the possibility of military strikes, have not persuaded Iran to abandon its ambitions to produce enriched uranium.

Good. Maybe Israel's enemies will think twice about attacking them. One FReeper once wrote that if Israel ever had a serious attack launched against them, they "wouldn't go quietly". Now we know just how "loudly" they would answer.

Just in case the former president has never had the thought occur to him--or even if he has, yet has somehow failed to comprehend its implications--it really does matter who is in possession of nuclear weapons. The thought of Israel's having 150 or so nukes--which may be entirely accurate; I confess that I am unable to put a precise number upon it--does not leave me awake at night, with sweaty palms, in the morbid fear that a couple of nukes, with the Star of David emblazoned upon them, may be making their way at any moment toward Washington and New York.
If this semi-senile ex-president (and I feel that I am giving him the benefit of the doubt with the modifier "semi") really cannot differentiate between Israel's having nuclear weapons and Iran's (or even North Korea's) having nuclear weapons, one can only suppose that his thought process is steeped in a squishy moral relativism that ultimately results in a doctrine of moral equivalence. And it is probably at this point that the old axiom about the fireman and the arsonist should come into play.

Regrettably, you are correct. Very few Americans will candidly admit to their being in the throes of anti-Semitism--it is usually camouflaged as "anti-Zionism," or a mere political difference with Israel's current leadership, or...well, something. Anything. But never what it really is.
Carter strikes me as anti-Semitic to the core. He just lacks the integrity or moral courage to express his core convictions unabashedly.

I would sure think so. He has certainly demonstrated complete irresponsibility and outright antagonism for U.S. and Israeli security. Even as dated as his Presidential experience is he was plenty close to the Clinton administration. Bring him in and waterboard the old fart. Find out what he’s been spilling and what he’s been told by Hamas.
