The Truth About BusinessWeek's Top MBA Schools: They Fail at Diversity
DiversityInc ^ | 29 May | Leon Fraser

(RE:) ...the changing demographics of the American work force and the increasing globalization of business interactions.

"Many individuals are likely to find themselves directing--or under the direction of--someone demographically dissimilar," business professors Derek R. Avery and Kecia M. Thomas write in the journal "Academy of Management Learning & Education" (2004). "Hence, understanding diversity and its impact of workplace relationships has become a critical business competency."

( ... ) as a sample, I looked at the course listings of BusinessWeek magazine's top 10 U.S. business schools to see what they offered in diversity management. The magazine ranks MBA programs based on student surveys, recruiter surveys and frequency of faculty articles in scholarly publications. Diversity training is not a rating factor to be on the BusinessWeek list. The latest MBA ranking is for 2006. All of the schools in the top 10 are very well known and highly regarded.

I obtained information from the schools' course catalogues and administrators to determine if the MBA programs offered a course in diversity management (with an intra-U.S. focus), or a course in cross-cultural management (with a multi-national focus), or both.

The results are that none of the top 10 MBA schools offer both diversity management and cross-cultural management courses, six offer one or the other, and four offer neither.

It’s becoming obvious that “diversity” is a code word for hate whitey.

It is code for no standards since non-whites underperform whites (exception - Asians in quantitative courses). Programs let in students that cannot compete, the diversity would is screamed, and standards are lowered.

Imagine what will happen when Obama is elected!

Programs let in students that cannot compete

And then they keep passing them in spite of substandard performance and the best part is that they get all this for free while "demographically similar" students have to qualify for admission and get tossed out if they fall below a 2.7 GPA and they get to pay through the nose for this very unequal treatment.

America never needed diversity training in the past when all its citizens strove to be Americans. I see diversity as a weapon being used by liberals to divide and weaken this country. Diversity training is a one way street where non gay Caucasians are told to bend over so certain groups of special people can kick you in the ass.

Most MBA programs are strongly politically correct. Courses involve human resource management have a strong focus on diversity in most programs. Perhaps the programs do not have a “hate whitey” course. Diversity and international relations are strong themes of almost every program. This author wants to force diversity training (”hate whitey”) into the curriculum.

Hence, understanding diversity...

This occurs early in childhood when the child learns there is a difference between self and other. Very basic stuff.

Ironically, the last true meritocracy in our country is professional sports, where performance is all that matters, and where minorities dominate.

They need to mandate the proper year-long course as a requirement for graduation in all undergraduate and graduate programs at all colleges and universities:

B/c maybe the author has -- or is a big shot in -- one of those pricey diversity training courses that way too many businesses get arm-twisted into holding for their employees? I don't know, but follow the money,

Ironically, the last true meritocracy in our country is professional sports, where performance is all that matters, and where minorities dominate.

There is a much less publicized meritocracy in the US called "small business". Oh, the government tries to make some parts of the playing field not level through "minority set-asides" and other such guises, but the small business that sell to consumers and other businesses are pretty much merit-based.

I’m a federal employee in SF; my boss is gay, my coworkers are Asian and black and Mexican, my boss’ boss is female, my HR head is a Wiccan, and most everybody belongs to the union and is a crazy liberal loon. . .

And yet I work very well with all of them, conservative white GOP Christian that I am, WITHOUT any need for “diversity training.”

When are we going to get past the 1980s?

I work for one of the largest financial firms in the world. The dominant races/ethnic groups are:

1. White American.

2. Indian/Indian American.

3. Korean/Korean American.

Most of the remainder are middle eastern, Chinese, or South American. I know one black guy in research.
