LONDON - Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff downplayed the threat of a nuclear terror attack Friday despite recent postings on al-Qaida-affiliated Web sites exhorting militants to pursue weapons of mass destruction for use against the U.S.
Speaking at London's Oxford Union, Chertoff said that while officials acknowledge al-Qaida's interest in developing such capability, the U.S. was more concerned about terrorists' use of conventional arms.
"The short answer is the intent is there. Its probability, particularly in the short term, is lower than conventional weapons," he told the students and journalists in attendance at the famed debating society.

I'm not an advocate of non-vigilance either and I don't care for Chertoff, if I haven't made that abundantly clear this past year especially, LOL.
Chertoff says: Marry, Reproduce, Obey ...
I mean still get a gas or bio weapon from Syria.
I personally don’t believe Syria has nuke weapons, though they would *like* to have them.
Chertoff is nothing but a mouthpiece for the administration. I don’t see how he can say this with a straight face, given our wide open borders which his boss works so hard to maintain.
Did you catch the accusation by the USA that Musharraf himself was involved in nuke tech proliferation to Iran and N Kor? Musharraf is right now getting out of town. Interesting.
yep
>> I dont see how he can say this with a straight face
Heck, Chertoff was *selected* for his ability to keep a straight face. (Certainly not for his competence!) The straight face doesn’t surprise me.
What I am wondering is WHY he said it at all. What’s the hidden agenda behind this statement?
I’m only guessing, but I assume that means via Dr. Khan?
And amazingly, (or perhaps not) there was a statement from the U.S. Richard Boucher that the U.S. *supported* the pardon of Dr. Khan....
Somebody woke up Skeletor?
Or are they saying Mushy personally delivered info or had it delivered?
Definitely would like to see a link on that.
Yes, they included a soundbite from the former sole guilty party—Dr Khan. He says he did not act alone.
Heard it on radio, ABC news on the hour, and one time only last night. A written story might be lurking somewhere. It would be an interesting thread.
Don’t worry, be happy!
Yes, I think they *really* beat the daylights out of the other, or almost. It’s actually painful to watch a few scenes. Definitely an updated “1984”.
:)
Yes, one would find it very hard to believe that Dr. Khan acted unilaterally and without the knowledge of a whole lot folks, including a significant few in the Pak nuclear community and some, *cough* *cough*, higher-level officials.
I have heard it rumored the good Dr. Khan also traveled to Saudi Arabia during his “world tour”. I don’t have confirmation of that.
Please ping me if you see a thread.
Something is likely to turn up today since Musharraf is apparently flying out to a retirement home in another country now.
Whoa! Well, one thing is for certain, there were a lot of jihadists that tried to kill Mushy for being too “soft”.
I don’t see how he could stay alive in Pakistan. Not for long.
Dr Khan also visited...Niger...way back in the late 1990’s when the Iraqis were sending officials to discuss “trade”
Dr Khan probably was not in Niger to sip sweet mint tea with the same deadheads that Joe Wilson, open CIA spy, visited

Maybe we don’t need to play it up. But is it necessary to play it down? The last time we played it down, many people suffered the consequence of security divisions and stasis.
When a government flack such as Chertoff says something like this, my antennae go up, as there is often something in the wind. This smells suspiciously to me like an early, pre-emptive CYA...
