Michael Pfleger has been the pastor of St. Sabina on the south side of Chicago for a long time, way past the normal cycle for a parish in the Chicago archdiocese. There have been rumors about Cardinal George rotating him out, but I suspect there are two reasons why this has not happened:

1. NO other parish in Chicago would want him. Most Catholic parishes in Chicago are heavily tied to the ethnic group in the neighborhood, and Pfleger would wear out his welcome anywhere in a few weeks, or more likely days.

2. Any priest who has to replace Pfleger at St. Sabina would be a sacrifice, and that would a tough place to get a volunteer to go into.

And, of course, eh does not want to leave where he is. Just packing and shipping his ego would be an enormous strain on a man of his age.

You’ve just listed three good reasons to close the church and ship Pfleger out. This isn’t a business — it’s a church. It’s mission is to bring souls to Christ, not promote a candidate, degrade white people, or tell blacks that racism is just as prevalent now as it was fifty years ago. If this is the best the Chicago Diocese can do, then give it up.

Rumor has it he has said if he is transferred he is taking his people and leaving.

I feel that you do not properly appreciate Fr. Phleger's incredible ecclesiastical accomplishments. After years of study in various seminaries, in which he was exposed to classical languages, the works of the early Church Fathers, and theological nuances of every kind, he has managed, despite these handicaps, to turn himself into a funky African-American Preacher Urban Charlatan Ghetto Rabble Rouser Implied Extortionist....

just like The Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Of course, Rev. Wright had a built-in pigmentation advantage .... but not much ... and he certainly didn't have Fr. Phleger's education to hold him back.
