WASHINGTON - Hillary Rodham Clinton will concede Tuesday night that Barack Obama has the delegates to secure the Democratic nomination, campaign officials said, effectively ending her bid to be the nation's first female president.
The former first lady will stop short of formally suspending or ending her race in her speech in New York City. She will pledge to continue to speak out on issues like health care. But for all intents and purposes, the two senior officials said, the campaign is over.
Most campaign staff will be let go and will be paid through June 15, said the officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to divulge her plans.
The advisers said Clinton has made a strategic decision to not formally end her campaign, giving her leverage to negotiate with Obama on various matters including a possible vice presidential nomination for her. She also wants to press him on issues he should focus on in the fall, such as health care.

The Clinton campaign quickly denied a report by The Associated Press that the New York senator would say on Tuesday night that Obama has the delegates to secure the Democratic nomination. "The AP story is incorrect. Senator Clinton will not concede the nomination this evening," the campaign said in a statement issued just minutes after the report was issued. Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe told CNN Clinton was "absolutely not" conceding the campaign and said the AP report was completely incorrect.
"We've got to spend the next three days... working the superdelegates to convince them a) Hillary got more votes than anyone else and b) she is the best one to take on John McCain in the fall," he said. With 31 delegates to the Democrats' August convention at stake, Democrats in South Dakota and Montana cast the final votes on Tuesday in the five-month state-by-state battle for the right to face Republican John McCain in November's presidential election. Obama needs fewer than 40 delegates to reach the 2,118 required to capture the nomination and become the first black presidential nominee of a major U.S. political party. The Illinois senator could hit that number as soon as Tuesday night depending on how quickly he wins commitments from nearly 200 uncommitted superdelegates -- party officials who are free to back any candidate. He secured one key endorsement on Tuesday from U.S. Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, the third-ranking Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives and the top-ranking black member of Congress. "Today the process ends," Clyburn told NBC's "Today" show. He urged other superdelegates to follow his lead and announce their support on Tuesday so the Democratic Party could have a clear nominee by the end of the day. A number of other superdelegates began throwing their support behind Obama. Voting ends in South Dakota at 7 p.m. MDT/9 p.m. EDT and in Montana an hour later, with results expected shortly after. The polls opened amid growing speculation about when Clinton would drop out of the race and end the grueling, historic battle for the Democratic nomination. I have this mental visual of Hillary in a coffin with all of the MSM pushing her into a grave....the problem is that Hillary is kicking and screaming....
The AP has long enjoyed its reputation as a solidly Left Wing Socialist Partisan propaganda wing of the DNC and thus is not a serious news organization.
Remember when this happened to Fred Thompson right before the Iowa caucus? It probably did hurt him and keep him out of second place. This may be the Obama campaign putting this out to make the superdelegates jump on board for him faster than they are right now.
The only problem is the plethora of outlets that use AP as their ‘reliable source’ for news.
How many local radio stations default to an AP feed for their hourly news updates?
Yawn looks like McNuts is the next prez.
If not the Obama campaign it is the MSM. They are trying to influence the voting today!

It will be my pleasure, to pick up tomorrow mornings paper and see the headline “CLINTON CONCEDES” and have her and her predator husband fade away into a forgotten presidency, in a forgotten “not-much happened” decade of American History. No Legacy, and no friends, even within their own party.
Is it possible that she has ‘hinted’ that she will be conceding tonight to draw out the ‘whitey’ tape?

Bingo! By suspending her campaign, she can operate under the radar and inflict her damage covertly!
Well, since they declared Slick Willie to be the "first Black president", why couldn't they just call Obama the first female president?

Comes the 2008 Democrat Convention, and at the Pepsi Center in Denver, there is a gigantic pile of bullsh!t and a humongous pile of cowsh!t with thousands of Democrats, delegates and otherwise, buzzing around them. When one was pulled aside and asked what the hell they were doing, he said:
'There's got to be a candidate in there somewhere!'
Dittos on that. Unfortunately, we must remain vigilant for her next attempt in 2012. It's depressing, but we can't let down our guard despite her current defeat.
One big difference in 2012 - her Senate seat will also be up for election, so she will have to decide whether for run for the Senate or the Presidency - or for both as Joe Lieberman did in 2000.
