CALEXICO Two street gangs vying for control of a human-smuggling operation here has resulted in two shootings in a dense neighborhood near the border fence, police said.
A man is recovering from a bullet wound after being shot by masked gunmen. Two other men are in Imperial County jail for their suspected involvement of an attempt to murder a rival.
We be-lieve it involves illegal alien smuggling and their attempts to cut into each others area and operations, Calexico police Sgt. Gonzalo Gerardo said.
Human smuggling in Calexico is lucrative: smugglers could receive as much as $1,500 per head five to 10 times per day, Gerardo said.
In smuggling stuff, not just illegal aliens, there is a lot of money to be made out there, he said.
The fight for control is escalating into violence that is spilling into the streets of the border towns lower east side, where the 15-foot border fence is an omnipresent fixture. SNIP Witnesses reported seeing several gunmen with bandanas over their faces flee the scene. Fernandez suffered a shot to the left upper back and was transported to Yuma police said. SNIP Gerardo said the human-smuggling operation in Calexico consists of smugglers scouting for Border Patrol units along the fence between downtown Mexicali and a Calexico neighborhood. The smugglers radio in to illegal aliens signaling them to scale the fence and then escort them to stash houses where a ride to their destinations is arranged, Gerardo said.
The U.S. Border Patrols El Centro Sector is aware of the gangs alleged activities through their coordination with the Calexico Police Department, Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Quinn Palmer said.
It would not be the first time a gang entered into smuggling activities especially in the urban areas that are located on the immediate border,.

Combine the worst traits of California and Mexico and what do you get=
That’s right! “Calexico”- A haven for gangs and criminals.
Comment:
I travel to Calexico often and so far no problems.
There is lots of talk by local citizens about the on going corruption down in Calexico.
The predominately-Hispanic citizens of Calexico have taken on a mindset close to that of Mexico and California’s airhead liberal voters.
That is, citizens not basing their votes on candidate qualifications but like Chris Matthews of PMSNBC fame on a feel good twinkle thereby perpetuating a slow downward spiral in all areas of government.
The Hispanic school board of Calexico and the city itself is morphing into all the bad traits we know about Mexico and its horrific realm of corruption.
The schools are especially having problems in the area of human resources due to racism in hiring Hispanic only and nepotism.
The schools mainly Hispanic leaders are appointing unqualified relatives and others to leadership roles in all areas.
It is almost as if Calexico citizens are saying stay away and let us screw up our lives because Uncle Sam the Great White SUCKER will eventually bail us out of a jam.
The city leaders are like many Mexican leaders and California liberals in that they make many laws for the masses and then arrogantly enforce only those that fit their agenda.
We are all waiting for the new liberal Obamanation program of “No City or Village Left Behind”.
Yes, Mexico’s corruption has crossed the border and is racing northward and may soon overtake in intensity that of Chicago and Detroit.
Hasta la vista baby.
Yesterday the Mexicans protested by blocking the North bound entrances to the US.
So from 9:am in the morning until last night no one could legally cross into the US.
