A day before the Puerto Rican primary election, I talked with several Mexican workers and business professionals during a visit to Mexico City. The subject was American presidential politics and the upcoming election. They had only the haziest notion that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was the frontrunner for the nomination.
They knew virtually nothing about his positions on the major issues, especially the hot button issue of immigration reform. They all readily recognized Clintons name and thought that if elected shed do a better job on the immigration question.
Their haziness in knowing that Obama was the odds on favorite to bag the Democratic presidential nomination and even their wariness toward him was not a surprise.
Three of the top newspapers on the newsstands in Mexico City -- Excelsior, El Universal, and Reforma -- made only bare mention of the Puerto Rican primary, and only passing mention of the aftermath.
The combination of the familiarity with and like of Clinton and the still blurred notion of what Obama stands for remains a tormenting dilemma for him and the Democrats.
Polls show that he will do well against Republican rival John McCain, but thats mostly because a majority of Latino voters in Texas, California, New Jersey, and New York are Democrats. These are all states in which Latino voters helped propel Clinton to a decisive win over Obama. In the contest against McCain, Obamas numbers pale in comparison to what Clinton would do against him.

Maybe I am missing something here but why should we give a sweaty rats a—, what the have to say in Mexico City?
Wrong race, of course. Now that the Chosen One has been chosen, he will no doubt have a slick ad campaign made ready to give the appearance of “reaching out” to the Latino community. After all, ALL Latinos LOVE Che, right??
Because of tribalism.
Legal American Latinos who’s opinions and votes happen to count don’t like Obama either.
Cannot apply that across the board, there are quite a few Black latinos, and quilty White ones as well.
Last night Dick Morris said this is why Barry will choose Richardson as his running mate.
I don't know, they have a pretty catchy campaign song going on:
LOL!
Yes, Osama would be smart to pick Richardson, who’s a non-threatening, somewhat anglicized hispanic who won’t scare the typical white person and will flip New Mexico and probably Colorado blue.
Agreed...Richardson is the likey choice...what’s so great if it happens will be to watch Carvelle’s response...remember he called Richardson a “Judas”.
The headline of this article is wrong. All 3 candidates support shamnesty, I figure those who support shamnesty will pick whoever will get it to them the quickest.
If he picks Richardson I figure McCain has to go with a woman.
I never apply anything across the board.
What will ol’ Serpenthead be doing now that his gal has lost? Will he lie low or continue running his mouth?
Great. McQueeg would probably go with one of the loser girl senators from Maine.
No he wouldn't.
If Osama picked Richardson, the Democrats are going to have a 2 minorities for president and VP, a black and a latino. That is going to piss off already pissed off whites (from Jeremiah Wright, Pfeleger etc) even more, and hasten Obama’s demise.
Obama is screwed either way.
Did the author ask the mexicans about the 6000 people killed near the border? Probably not. Might have cost him a loan or the permit to build something.
