WASHINGTON - Barack Obama is keeping Howard Dean as the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, while bringing in one of his top strategists to oversee the party's operations.

Obama made changes at the party headquarters his first order of business as the presumed presidential nominee. Campaign adviser Paul Tewes was dispatched to help lead the changes Thursday, with Dean still as the chairman.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said Obama appreciates Dean's hard work to grow the party.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Campaign officials say Republican John McCain collected $21.5 million in May, in his best month of presidential fundraising. He enters June with $31.5 million cash on hand.

McCain has been raising money in a joint effort with the Republican National Committee, which reported raising $23.7 million in May, party officials say. The RNC had $53.6 million in the bank at the start of June.

Both figures signal a strong showing for Republicans in the presidential contest, especially as they prepare to confront Democrat Barack Obama, whose extraordinary fundraising has set records. The Democratic National Committee, which lags far behind its GOP counterpart in money, and the Obama campaign have not disclosed their May fundraising figures.

Just one second! BO is not the nominee yet and he will not be until the convention. What gives him the power to make changes at the DNC?

The media said he’s the nominee. Pelosi, Reid, and Dean said he’s the nominee. Tim Russert, Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann say he’s the nominee.

What’s all this about a convention?

“There’s a party in the world like a great black pit
and the vermin of the world inhabit it
and its morals aren’t worth what a pig could spit
and it goes by the name of Democrat.”
