EXCLUSIVE: China gets U.S. Olympics help (Sending previously restricted equipment)
The Washington Times ^ | 6-5-2008 | Bill Gertz

Posted on 06/05/2008 3:07:48 PM PDT by raybbr

EXCLUSIVE:

The Bush administration has approved the export of sensitive equipment and expertise to China's military and police forces to bolster security at the Beijing Olympics, according to a number of private and public interviews and documents.

The support includes security and military equipment that is restricted for export under the Export Administration Act, prompting some critics of the policy to question its legality.

The FBI and other U.S. security agencies also are helping China to develop sensitive counterterrorism coordination techniques, such as creating joint security operations and intelligence centers, according to Bush administration defense and national security officials.

The officials said U.S. support to the Beijing Olympics is modeled on the security plan and federal assistance used for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. The techniques can be used for surveillance of protesters, including Tibetans, they said.

The support is unprecedented for an administration that came to office voicing distrust of China, especially after a 2001 crisis involving the midair collision of a U.S. surveillance plane and Chinese jet interceptor.

It has raised concerns among human rights groups that some of the gear may be used to repress internal dissent, and has angered some in Washington who regard China as a long-term security threat.

Chinese officials said they think the assistance is appropriate given a history of terrorist attacks on the Olympics and the need to protect the athletes and visitors.

China. These are the same people whose government sanctioned their hackers messing with the US power grid and causing blackouts and who have been spying on our military networks.

I'm tired of coddling our enemies.

Only the Gob’r’mint is allowed to break its own laws. If I exported a document that was that sensitive, I would be thrown in jail.

A little uncomfortable? If this happened while Bill Clinton was in the White House, would you still feel just "a little uncomfortable" ????

Part of me wants to be outraged, but part of me thinks this is par for the course when it comes to the Bush administration.

You are a master of understatement. If they can't steal 'it' or bribe someone to get 'it', it appears we will just give 'it' to them.

All told, there has not been such a prime opportunity for Heaven to smite since Sodom and Gomorrah. Imagine China being returned to the Stone Age. But how?

Zombies would be good. The Chinese have these bizarre hopping zombies called “Jiang Shi” they feature in *amazingly* bad horror movies. Though you have to credit the actors who spend 80 minutes hopping around like giant, decaying bunny rabbits, which must be terribly painful to do.

Can you imagine the surprise when several million hopping zombies would descend onto the Olympic venue as a million Chinese police tried to fend them off?

If the Washington Times is correct in this report, then the U.S. government has now gone from just indirectly empowering a totalitarian regime by making it wealthy to direct help that can and will be used to suppress internal dissent.

According to administration security officials, the FBI also is working with Chinese security authorities within an intelligence fusion center to identify threats to the Olympic Games and to conduct surveillance of threat groups.

We have FBI personnel directly aiding a totalitarian government's security goons?

A Chinese Communist Party document on Olympic security that was obtained by The Times identifies the Chinese Community Party's main security concerns regarding the games as Tibetan "separatists," Falun Gong religious practitioners and criminals.

Apparently the excuse for this is that Americans might be in some danger if they choose to visit the Olympics.

Well, why don't we do what we usually do? Just warn people that Red China might be a dangerous place to casually visit, and maybe remind them that Red China is the world's largest and most disgusting totalitarian state: a state that is already responsible for the deaths of millions. Giving them material and personnel aid is the last thing that I think we should do.

Some U.S. officials, including those who question the legality and ethics of the support, said China plans to dispatch the 38th Group Army to Beijing for the games. The army group, with about 25,000 troops, took part in the 1989 crackdown in Tiananmen Square, when troops opened fired on unarmed pro-democracy protesters, killing hundreds or thousands.

It is hard to believe that our government thinks that it wise to be directly aiding the butchers of Tiananmen.

Oh, that’s just great. Instead of boycotting over human rights, and the fact that they can’t protect our athletes, let’s just hand over restricted military and police gear! Great idea, Bush! Just wonderful! Sometimes I really wonder whether our government really even gives a crap anymore. Do they even THINK about these things at all? I mean, granted, this isn’t as bad as what Clinton sold the Chinese, but still. Do they need more help to strengthen their communist government?

If the above makes no sense it’s due to my absolute disgust...

As soon as they steal/copy/borrow enough sensitive technologies to perfect their totalitarian state they won’t need us anymore - that’s when stuff really hits the fan.

Oh, they might like the idea of our billions and trillions of dollars to run their factories churning out cheap goods, but we have been helping the ChiComs to salvage their worthless economic system and we are turning them into a 21st century superpower that will surpass the USSR for danger-quotient in a decade or two.

Think of how much more idiotic this whole package (Olympics etc.) has become for the West: first we allow the PRC to enjoy this enormous propaganda boon of hosting the Olympics, then we say, “Oh, let us help you make it more secure” and we turn over all sorts of highly sensitive technologies — so in the end we use this huge propaganda event that we never should have allowed them to enjoy as the pretext for handing over all sorts of technologies that will further benefit their totalitarian regime.

Priceless!
