A female teacher accused of having a year-long sexual relationship with one of her underage male students surrendered to Margate police on Friday morning.
Margate Police say that Christine Jouini, 38, who teaches the 11th and 12th grade at The Center Academy, a private school in Coral Springs, was charged with three counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor.
Margate Police spokesman Detective Chip Kolenda said the illicit affair was exposed after the former student, who has since graduated and has turned 18, recently confessed the activity to another teacher at the school.
The former student said that between August 2006 and September 2007 he had slept with Jouini several times, police said. The teacher, police said, then reported the incident to the State of Florida child abuse hotline.
The student, who was 16-years-old at the time, claims that the sexual activity took place away from school property and at Jouini's apartment, which at the time was located in Margate.
The student said the sex was consensual.
Police say that several witnesses claim to have seen Jouini and the boy together.
Margate Police said Jouini, who now lives in Lauderhill, denies ever having had a sexual relationship with the student.
She turned herself in without incident after a warrant was issued for her arrest.
Jouini is currently being held at BSO's Main Jail in Fort Lauderdale.
