I’ve seen that clip on Fox at least a dozen times. Today they released some 911 calls. But, it appears the man just walked out into oncoming traffic in the middle of the street. His getting hit shouldn’t have surprised, but the reaction of the drivers and bystanders surely does.
Actually, he was walking into a lane where nothing in front of him should have been coming. It was a two-way street. The cars that hit him were not supposed to be in that lane, passing a car ahead of them. There was an unbroken double line in the middle of the street: no passing.
And if you watch closely you can see that he looked before he started crossing; he looked in the direction the traffic should have been coming from.
Not quite. Watch it again. He was in the lane with the traffic coming from his back, and was watching for it. Two cars, apparently related in some way, went into the on coming lane so they would not have wait for a vehicle that was stopped or turning. The first one missed him, the second one got him pretty square on. Both vehicles fled the scene, taking the first available turn. Those folks are in a heap of trouble, if they can be found.
My daughter got whacked by just an impatient (lady) driver. Daughter was turning left, lots of oncoming traffic. But someone stopped to let her turn into her "office" parking lot. The road curved to her right, and unbeknownst to her, a lady was barreling along on the shoulder, hidden by the other vehicles in the queue, trying to "beat" the line of cars. She T-boned my daughter, totaling her car, but causing her only minor injury, stiff and sore mostly. That was in south suburban Boston. I drove the replacement vehicle from San Antonio to Boston, over labor day weekend, and then flew back.
