Church attacks Labour for betraying Christians
Times Online ^ | 6/7/08 | Ruth Gledhill

The policies of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown have helped to generate a spiritual, civic and economic crisis in Britain, according to an important Church of England report.

Labour is failing society and lacks the vision to restore a sense of British identity, the report says in the Church’s strongest attack on the Government for decades. It accuses the Government of “deep religious illiteracy” and of having “no convincing moral direction”.

The report, commissioned for the Church of England and to be published on Monday, accuses the Government of discriminating against the Christian Churches in favour of other faiths, including Islam. It calls for the appointment of a “Minister for Religion”, who would act as the Prime Minister’s personal “faith envoy” and who would recognise the contribution of faith communities to Britain across every government department.

The 180-page report, seen by The Times, describes the Government as moral, but lacking a “compass” and reflects an attempt by the Church to carve out an effective role for itself in the 21st century as a provider of welfare for young and old.

The report was commissioned by the Bishop of Hulme, the Right Rev Stephen Lowe, Bishop for Urban Life and Health, with the support of the archbishops of Canterbury and York, Dr Rowan Williams and Dr John Sentamu.

The report comes only days after Dr Sentamu accused Mr Brown of sacrificing liberty for misguided notions of equality and of betraying new Labour’s mantra of “rights and responsibilities”. It shows the extent to which church leaders feel betrayed by the Government’s embrace of a secular agenda.

If you lie down with dogs...expect fleas.

BTW, nice to see the Church of England acting like it has a spine, even if it is more than a little late in finally growing one.

They portray a Government committed to research into Muslim communities but barely interested in Christian involvement in Britain’s civic and charitable life.

Christians aren't a threat Muslims are, and liberals only know how to appease.

As I understand it, there are very few Christians, in any meaningful sense of the word, left in England or indeed in most of Europe. This applies to a good many of the bishops themselves.

Why should the government be interested in something that doesn't exist?

The Labor party aren’t liberals, they’re neo-Marxists. The church leaders are the liberals, and very foolish ones at that. How could they expect anything else?

Yeah, I labeled them liberals because true Marxists would throw all the Muslims and Christians in jail, or kill them off. But I guess neo-Marxists is a good description.

I use neo-Marxist as shorthand for those people (most of the left) who accept the basic conclusions of Marxism on an emotional level, without ever learning the ideology. They probably couldn’t understand Leninist dialectical materialism if they tried. They just “feel” that capitalsm is bad, religion is phony, America is fascist snd imperialist, and government should take people’s wealth and give it to the poor because it’s “fair”, government should disarm the populace, etc. It really isn’t classic liberalism at all. Just a dumbed down, public school version of Communism.

Total Fertility Rate (TFR) 1.8

It doesn't really matter what they say now. They don't even replace their population anymore (2.1 TFR).

Leave it to the Brits to wish for a Minister for Religion as a way to deal with the problem...yeah, that’s what they need, another bureaucracy.

A lady I know who lives in England was walking in an area where some Muslims live. She wears a small gold cross. A Policeman stopped her and told her that she had to cover the cross up and that it was a symbol of hate. She begrudgingly did as she was told. This is not the first time this same thing has come to my attention even though it is the first time that I actually knew the person.

This is British community Police work and it’s most offensive!

Come on you Brits no-one has the right to do such a thing and even if they make up a new law that says they do stand up for yourselves. Winnie would be rolling in his grave at the lack of courage in England these days.

Your young men are to busy fighting at soccer games and not for anything that matters.

Sadly, it seems, the sun is finally setting!

Who goosed the Church of England?

Does this mean they'll take a biblical stand on homosexuality, for instance? Maybe they ought to clean up their own politics before taking on the politics of others.
