Bring a rifle. Even the much-maligned .30-30 is twice as powerful as a .44 magnum.

As Alaskan natives told me: "If you do, file off the front sight." When I thought about it a moment, this made zero sense. So I asked "Why?" "So it doesn't hurt so much when the bear shoves it up your ." The preferred weapon in Alaska seems to be a 12ga with big slugs.
