READING, Pa. -- Police said a 61-year-old Reading woman beat her 16-year-old granddaughter severely after finding her in bed with another girl.
Joyce Beddell is charged with aggravated and simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and endangering the welfare of a child.
Police said Beddell's granddaughter suffered serious bruises to her legs and buttocks during Thursday's assault with a cane and a belt. The other girl fled from the house before the beating began.
Beddell told police she had done nothing wrong. She told police she should be allowed to discipline her granddaughter as she wishes.
Beddell was jailed in lieu of $10,000 bail. It was unclear if she had a lawyer.
As a former teacher at an all-black public school, you hear the stories about the “breaking in” that a lot of the sports team gets from the older LUGs in the team. It really is disgusting behavior.
“Attacks” is a word you would use for a random stranger. This is a grandmother “spanking” her child. For a grandmother to “attack” a grandchild, the result would have to involve broken bones and internal injuries. You gotta love how the media uses loaded words.

It’s not easy for a grandmother to stand by when she’s sees her granddaughter muffing up her life.
Yes, some people need to control their emotions. But to equate this a an “honor killing, American style” is nuts (and I’m being polite)

How old do you think the grandmother is? She looks overweight too. It wouldn’t surprise me if she has high blood pressure and diabetes. For her to give a “whipping” to a 16 y/o...the 16 y/o wasn’t fighting her...or much anyway. That is respect. Probably the one that ran away was the one that called the police. Hopefully, the granddaughter will get right with her grandmother and they will work this out. Prayer up for them anyway...and the other girl too.
Yeah, this has nothing to do with gay or not. Underage, having sex in Grandma's house. Ask for a trial by jury. If she actually crossed the line between discipline and beating/abusing her, that will come out in court, but, sounds to me like a good butt-whipping to get this little lady on the right track.
I don't care that it was a girl instead of a boy. Just that the girl was only sixteen in Grandma's house playing around.

shows how soft some have become, so what if she got a few slaps, sometimes I wonder how did I get through childhood, with no helmet for my bicycle, no pads either, getting hit when I did something wrong, etc etc
I’d have been mad too and then I would get my daughter mental help with her illness, stupid little girl, within a year she’ll be running around saying look at me look at me and thinking that some poor dumb guy will give her attention and no doubt some dumb arse would , of which she’ll do this sick twisted act more.
Some time ago I was in a club when these two women kept looking over, I looked over and then they started touching each other, I looked away and then went to the bar.
the girl comes over and asks me if I liked the show,I told her no, and that she should try to get better ways of attention.
she asked me that she thought all men liked it and I told her no obviously not, I like a woman who is classy and beautiful not an attention seeker and that maybe she should stop reading her magazines and watching her shows as it is not true what they are telling her
After that we sat down and she actually felt ashamed of what she did
That night I thought to myself that I hopeed I had helped her out.
she really was confused about society and her mother was never there to guide her.
three years later I saw her married ,now has a child. she has a great job and she thanked me for that talk we had, she never gets drunk, she doesn’t do drugs and she leads a respected beautiful natural life as a mother and a wife.
No matter how much the political discussions piss me off (and they often do), posts like that keep me coming back to FR!
