Federal officials prepare for Rainbow Family

CHEYENNE -- Federal officials began arriving in Riverton on Monday to prepare for the Rainbow Family gathering, which is expected to be held on U.S. Forest Service land in the Big Sandy area near Pinedale.

A national incident management team made up of about 40 Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management personnel was setting up shop to deal with the potentially thousands of people who could turn out for the event in early July.

"The Rainbow Gathering of Living Light" is a weeklong campout that has been held on federal lands around the country each year since the early 1970s. Thousands of people typically attend the events, which include music and socializing focused on the group's themes of peaceful living and caring for the earth.

Rita Vollmer, a Utah-based Forest Service employee serving as information officer for the incident management team, said Monday that 300 to 500 Rainbow participants had already set up camp in the Bridger-Teton National Forest near Pinedale. The campers were concentrated near Big Sandy Campground and Dutch Joe Guard Station, she said.

Vollmer said the incident management team had not received official word from the loosely organized Rainbow Family regarding exactly where the gathering will be held. "Unofficial" Web sites maintained by Rainbow Family participants said the event will take place in the Big Sandy area.

The Big Sandy River runs through the southern Wind River Mountains in Sublette County; the Forest Service's Big Sandy Campground is located about 25 miles southeast of Pinedale.

Vollmer said the national incident management team includes officials who will work with Rainbow participants on logistical issues, as well as law enforcement officers.

The team also includes resource officers who will work with festival-goers to protect natural resources when it comes to issues such as the location of latrines and kitchens.

"They'll work together pretty much throughout the duration of time the group is on public land," Vollmer said. "It's pretty much to ensure that resources aren't damaged."

Gene Smithson, a senior special agent in the Forest Service's Washington, D.C. office for Law Enforcement and Investigations, is leading the incident management team, Vollmer said.

Vollmer said it's standard for the Forest Service to create a management team for Rainbow Family gatherings.

Hard to imagine thousands of unwashed smelly bodies all in one location. My sympathy goes out to the FS and BLM folks who have to put up with them.

I saw an area of the Nantahala Forest these folks occupied once years ago. The damage was unimaginable. It is probably still scarred.

I shudder to think about it. My grandparents live just beyond that area and it is such a scenic area. One time, I would like to be able to spend some time on the ground, not just drive through the outskirts.

Some of the most scenic country around. My family used to hunt elk just South of Pinedale. Beautiful is hardly a word to describe it.

"Pretty much, pretty much, pretty much" Typical Leftist crap. The rest of us are restricted on what we can do on "public lands" but these scum can trash out an area on a mega-scale and it's supported. Yeah, they sure are "living light" on the land, what a pathetic joke--on us.

It is some scenic territory but when I was a very young kid, I dreaded going through that area since I would get extremely carsick.

Naturally, everyone else in the car wanted AC or heat so the windows stayed up. I would beg for just some fresh air. All I needed was a little. BTW, there was usually one heavy smoker in the group.

I have heard of a 4WD/Jeep rally that happens up there and want to go one day. I would also like to actually visit the gorge, not just drive through. My grandparents are still in the Murphy area so I would have a place to crash. I also have an aunt up there that makes a top flight pizza.

Is that Murphy Creek? I do not know of a town named Murphy in Wyoming.

When we hunted elk we stayed with a sister-in-law of one of my uncles. They were wonderful hosts, but since they were Mormon they did not drink coffee and we were all Lutherans who lived around the coffee pot. She wanted to be a good hostess so she provided the coffee. It was the first attempts at making it and I like strong coffee, but what she made would stand up and bark at you. Funny, that was 45 or so years ago and I remember it like yesterday.

Many, many years ago, my family vacationed at the Lake of the Ozarks. Dad was so proud of the new-fangled air conditioning unit in the car that any time it got above 65 degrees, the windows went up and the air conditioning on. He also chain smoked. Well, the roads were barely paved, and in places only one lane. Up, down, curve, up, curve, down, up.....when we arrived at the resort I bolted from the car and spewed hurl horizontally for 5 feet. Mother was horrified because the owners of the resort were there to greet us. But, I feel your pain. :)

Murphy, NC is just outside of Natahala Gorge mentioned a few posts earlier. Sorry about any confusion.
