Bush to urge lifting of ban on offshore drilling Tue Jun 17, 2008 7:55pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush will make an announcement on Wednesday about energy and call on Congress to pass legislation lifting a ban on offshore oil drilling, the White House said.

"With gasoline now over $4 a gallon, tomorrow he will explicitly call on Congress to also pass legislation lifting the congressional ban on safe, environmentally friendly offshore oil drilling," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said on Tuesday.

You’re a little behind the times, aren’t you George? ...John McCain pushed this several months ago.

If he asked Congress to declare the sky blue...would they?

$4 gas might be the best thing that’s occurred in the energy area in the last 30 years. Short term pain for very long term gain.

The results of this will rank right up there with his call for Social Security reform.

Oh well. It will give the Dems a good laugh.

The Good Lord knows I like President Bush as an individual and that I am very proud of his conduct in the WOT where he has often had to stand alone but he is always a day late and a dollar short on political issues. He and his advisors just have poor political instincts or they are cowed by the media and the left. Either way, it’s not gonna change.

Interesting. I think we’re seeing a coordinated attack on the energy front. McCain, Norm Coleman, and Charlie Crist, all of whom previously opposed offshore drilling, are now on board, and now the President is pressing the attack. I think there must have been some serious backroom arm-twisting going on.

Read between the lines. There's always an escape clause with these weasels. He knows damn well that "safe, environmentally friendly offshore oil drilling" dooms it. No such thing as far as the DIMs and the EnviroTards are concerned.

My Energy Manifesto:

The following, on one form or another, was sent by me to VP Cheney, the Whitehouse, and John McCain's website over the last few months. Maybe they listened....but it took a while.

* Cease all ethanol production. It takes away from food production and the unintended consequence is higher food costs. As diesel prices go up, the cost of farming tips the balance of cost to make ethanol a bad idea. Just say "no" to ethanol! Even Jimmy Carter says that diverting farm production from food to fuel is dumb – even HE gets it. This will create only ONE "blend" of gasoline and will cease regional "boutique" blends (gasohols) which are stupid, costly, and meaningless. Trucking custom blends around the country is wasteful. Ethanol blends may actually lead to fewer miles to the gallon, and adds to the cost of production and transportation. Newer cars do not need oxygenated fuels.

* Lift the restrictions in order to drill for oil in Alaska, Gulf of Mexico, and other sites in the CONUS as a matter of national security.

* Encourage the petro industry to construct state-of-the-art refineries and/or retrofit current and dormant ones and crank up production for our newly-accessed oil in the CONUS.

* Make all “carbon credit” scams unlawful. Discrediting Algore should have been a slam-dunk a long time ago. Stop electing Reps who buy into the Global Warming / Global Cooling / Climate Change Hoax. CO2 is not our enemy!

* Construct SEVERAL, regional Pebble-Bed Modular Reactors (or other similar modern designs) that are rechargeable, and cleaner than any current nuclear generator design. Refine spent nuke fuel for recycling. DO SOMETHING NUCLEAR to resolve energy problems.

* Use the residual heat from the reactors above to process motor fuel from coal and/or shale. Even though Clinton "stole" some of the best coal reserves, we still have a lot to use.

* Become independent enough to make the cartels (i.e. OPEC) inconsequential.

* Convince local taxing bodies to lift or cap the sales tax on gasoline so that as gas prices go up, the local tax collectors don’t see a windfall revenue jump at the expense of the consumer. The Federal government could compel the states (and locals) to cap the fuel taxes.

If you squint real hard, and read between the lines, the ‘manifesto’ will require fewer RINOs and LibDems and the election of some clear-minded conservatives to even consider the above.

Well, if Bush or Congress plans on doing anything about, they ought to do it soon, or Bush will be calling on business, begging them to give working Americans pay raises, before they march on D.C. with torches and pitchforks.

You can only choke off and bleed the the working class so long, until really bad things start happening.

Maybe, maybe not. This issue has been dropped right into the laps of Republicans as a golden opportunity in the current electoral season ... its good to finally see some of them begin to run with it, albeit a bit late, but at least they're beginning to run with it.

If the Pubbie's run with this issue, they'll destroy the Dems at the polls in November. Dems won't be laughing then.

Only about 7 years too late.......

Nonsense, he's been calling for it all along.

However, complaints over high prices are rolling into Washington so his words this time may resonate; it is seen like never before that the Dems' are twiddling their thumbs on the issue.

You're joking. Right?

They aren't called the Party of Stupid for no reason.

How many times have they pulled defeat out of the jaws of victory?

Don't sell them short. They will again. If anything, they are consistent. Case in point? Dole 96/McCain 08.

” I think there must have been some serious back room arm twisting going on.” If they would only get out of their insulated surroundings for just one day and listen to the everyday common people they would get an ear full of “DRILL HERE AND DRILL NOW”. My God the people of Washington D.C. have to be the stupidest people in the world!

Yes he has. In addition, he has opened large areas to drilling in the continental US. BDS affects people's memories first, apparently.
