I think he said he would issue an executive order to complement a Congressional action...(I think th eimplication is there that he could do it without them) Also touting drilling in ANWR and increasing refinery capacity...speed up the permit process. Good stuff but he’s said most of it before...Congress is the ‘just say no’ to all of is proposals. We need to flood the Washington switchboard again (ala immigration reform)

wasn't it GHW Bush's Executive Order that put some of this stuff off limits? Can't the President just sign an EO rescinding the former EO?

See #19

ANWR has about one fifth of the reserves we have offshore. The offshore ban is the much bigger supply restriction. Ultimately, we need ANWR too. But this is a great start.

Yeah... I read that. After posting of course. Why bother reading an entire thread when one can just jump right in the middle and restate things already said... ;-)

ANWR makes more sense from all angles. Weird.

Not really. Offshore drilling rigs are mobile, float, can be shippied/moved easily from anywhere in the world to anywhere in the world in a very short period of time. Drilling in frigid wilderness has to have supply roads built, fuel dumps, etc.

Once you strike the oil, you have to truck it out or build a pipeline in subfreezing temps...viscosity problems, etc.

Offshore, you just unroll your pipe on the ocean floor and go wherever you want, and the ocean keeps your pipe at a nice comfy constant temp.

Offshore drilling and production would seem to be a much easier, quicker solution.

One of the reasons I am so infrequently here is the absolute frustration at people posting who either DO NOT READ the previous posts or DO NOT LISTEN to what the President said.

There are two components: the executive order and a law Congress passed. The President said he would lift the executive order concurrently with signing the law Congress will hopefully pass.

He also did a good job in blaming democrat opposition to drilling offshore, drilling in ANWR, using oil shale, and constructing refineries for the rise in gasoline prices.

It is now the job of Congressional Republicans and intelligent Americans to repeat this over and over again.

I actually think the dynamics of oil may change if we really DO start drilling.

Even having debate about it has got the Saudis a bit uneasy...this is good in and of itself.

Thank goodness for FR.

One of the Marine helicopters has been circling outside my window for the past half hour. I wondered what was going on. Presidential Rose Garden Press Conference must be it!

“If he was REALLY serious, he would declare our oil to be a matter of Strategic National Security and open drilling by presidential order.”

Interesting. I didn’t know he could do that.

So, once we drill and get all of that black gold out of the ground, what are we going to do with it?

Will we ship it out the country for refining and then import our own oil back into this country?

Or will we build more refineries on our own soil and become energy self sufficient?

I guess you weren't around in the 1970s. Gasoline shortages, lines, locking gas caps...

Bingo! so many "tree huggers" of today have no clue what the country went through during Jimmah Carter's presidency.

Of course all they teach at school is the "air brushed" version.

We need to beat the Dems over the head with this issue; as seal hunters do to baby seals.

I’ll believe him when he unilaterally rescinds the order regardless of what Congress does. Order it open and let the Supreme Court decide whether or not he has the power to do it. Let’s see if someone sues and tries to stop him.
