House Democrats Call for Nationalization of Refineries

Urgent: House Democrats call for nationalization of refineries

Per Pergram-Capitol Hill

House Democrats responded to President's Bush's call for Congress to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling. This was at an on-camera press conference fed back live.

Among other things, the Democrats called for the government to own refineries so it could better control the flow of the oil supply.

They also reasserted that the reason the Appropriations Committee markup (where the vote on the amendment to lift the ban) was cancelled so they could focus on preparing the supplemental Iraq spending bill for tomorrow.

At an off-camera briefing, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said the same. And a senior Republican House Appropriations Committee aide adds that "there were multiple reasons for the postponement" including discussion on the supplemental. But the aide said there was the thought that Democrats may wish to avoid a debate today on energy amendments.

Here are the highlights from briefing

Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), member of the House Appropriations Committee and one of the most-ardent opponents of off-shore drilling

1115

We (the government) should own the refineries. Then we can control how much gets out into the market.

Hinchey on why they postponed the Appropriations markup

1119

I think there aren't enough votes for the Peterson amendment. It wasn't taken up (the Interior spending bill) because of the omnibus Appropriations bill. That's the main focus of the Appropriations Committee.

Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL)

1116

They (Republicans) have a one-trick pony approach.

Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV), Chairman of the Resources Committee

1106

You cannot drill your way out of this.

Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), chairman of the House Select Committee on Global Warming

1111

The White House has become a ventriloquist for the oil and gas energy.

Not likely. We have at least 100 million narcissists in this country who are totally ignorant of history and political philosophy.

Oh yeah, government running the refineries is really going to get things straightened out. Always does. Look at the DMV. Your local metro system? Health Care? Border control?

The refineries are NOT the problem. They are running at near capacity.

well that is problem now isn't it...the refineries are running efficient so what happens when gov. controls a business...that's right it goes south in a hurry.. I think that is the plan...destroy the oil companies by killing the refineries

This idea is so dangerous, so destructive, that we should and must be willing to do whatever is necessary to stop it.

Isn't this the kind of situation the Founding Fathers had in mind when they wrote the Second Amendment? And isn't that the reason dimlibs are always talking about repealing it?

Just a rhetorical question, of course ...

I’m calling for the control of borders so we can better control the flow of illegal immigrants. They can take care of that first and then get back to us.

They need to deal with things they have control over and - nationalizing refineries is not one of them. It goes against everything our country is about.

The scary thing is that there are so many blind followers out there, that they might just agree with anything these Dem’s say.

O’Hussein! You dork. I drove my SUV, air conditioning running full blast in it, today.....AND had my air in the house set at 72 degrees.....AND the pool pump was running, and do you think I give one WIT what some other stinkin’ country thinks of me?

Just because you said what you said.....I’m gonna go readjust the thermostat and stick on a sweater.

It’s getting cold in here.

The Dems can go pound sand.

Love,
Grammie

They are running at near capacity because 1) we haven’t had any new refineries allowed to be made (govt approval) in the last 30 years, and 2) because they have to make 20+ different fuel blends for different parts of the country.

And third, because of maintenance, natural disasters or accidents, when one goes down, it puts extra stress on the fuel supply.

"Is it time for another Boston Tea Party?????"

Not in the same fashion. There is already news about people in L.A. getting into verbal and physical confrontations about cutting in line at gas stations. It's $4.60 for cheap. People are mad because everybody knows there is no reason for it to get that high. Bush can do 2 things that he's holding off on for negotiations with Congress.

This is going to be the issue this year. An Executive Declaration of an Energy Emergency. The other is we drill here, drill now and pay less.

I don’t want to hear anymore BS from anyone on FR about “oh, there are some good democrats... like Zell Miller”. There are NO good democrats.

The democrat socialists are the party of EVIL in the USA. They can no longer be tolerated - they MUST be DESTROYEDby whatever means necessary.

I will NEVER, EVER, vote for ANY democrat because they belong to the party of evil. If they have ANY decency remaining, let them declare themselves as CONSERVATIVES. Same with republicans. There are few conservatives in the republican party either.

The democrats have become communists/socialists, the pubbies have become liberal democrats, what’s left for CONSERVATIVES?

We have a LOT of work to do, boys and girls. It will not be easy, it will not be pretty, and it must be done if we are going to save our Republic.

Rep. Ed Markey D-MA

The Dems seem to chant this phrase. It's an agitprop. Yes you can Markey. Where do you Dims believe where all the oil comes from, Santa Claus?

"The White House has become a ventriloquist for the oil and gas energy." The Democrats can't even get their metaphors straight. Surely, they meant to say that the oil and gas industry is the ventriloquist & the White House is the dummy. (If they had said that, the metaphor would make sense -- it would still be nonsense, of course.)
