BAGHDAD: Four Western oil companies are in the final stages of negotiations this month on contracts that will return them to Iraq, 36 years after losing their oil concession to nationalization as Saddam Hussein rose to power.

Exxon Mobil, Shell, Total and BP — the original partners in the Iraq Petroleum Company — along with Chevron and a number of smaller oil companies, are in talks with Iraq's Oil Ministry for no-bid contracts to service Iraq's largest fields, according to ministry officials, oil company officials and an American diplomat.

The deals, expected to be announced on June 30, will lay the foundation for the first commercial work for the major companies in Iraq since the American invasion, and open a new and potentially lucrative country for their operations.

I can hear it now from the dimocRATS. See we told you it was all about oil and lining the pockets of Bush, Cheney and Haliburton.

I know there has been a regime change in France, but I’m not sure whether Total deserves a place at the table.

The main reason why France fought tooth and nail to block the invasion of Iraq was the corrupt sweetheart deal that Total-Fina-Elf had with Saddam Hussein. That, incidentally, was also why Canada refused to participate, because of the Total connection.

They are in talks?

If it wasn't for the U.S. they'd all be running around headless.

I would hope they're talking about 2 dollar a gallon gas.

That must be why the Dims started talking about nationalizing the oil companies today.

This will help pay off some of our investment in Iraq. Their oil should be sold at a huge discount to US companies to partially make up for everything we’ve done for them.

Oil Giants? Exxon-Mobil ranks 14th in size among the world’s oil companies, nearly all of the larger ones being wholly owned by governments or operating under franchises granted by governments.

Haliburton will make a fortune, as well it should. Iraq’s Congress has a better energy policy than Do Nothing Nancy’s.

...believed that Iraq’s output could increase to about 3 million barrels a day from its current 2.5 million, though it would probably take longer than the six months the Oil Ministry estimated.

Fyfe’s organization estimated that repair work on existing fields could bring Iraq’s output up to roughly four million barrels per day within several years. After new fields are tapped, Iraq is expected to reach a plateau of about six million barrels per day...

Good News
