It was revealed on Jun. 20 that N. Korea is demanding money for 'Cooling Tower Demolition Event' at Yongbyon Nuclear Complex. If U.S. starts the process of removing N. Korea from the list of state terror sponsors, N. Korea is to destroy the cooling tower within 24 hours, which would be broadcast live all over the world.
Diplomatic sources said, "N. Korea has said that they would stage the 'demolition event' as a way to display their commitment to denuclearization process. Recently, however, they claim that the event is not an obligation (but a favor,) and they are demanding (money for) demolition expenses and some extra. U.S. and N. Korea are trying to work out a deal on the amount of money, ranging between a few hundreds of thousands and a few million dollars."
N. Korea is said to allow that media from participating countries at 6-party talks broadcast the 'demolition event.' U.S. and N. Korea are discussing the arrangement that the media would pay for the expenses as 'participating fee.'
A diplomatic source said, "The demolition of the cooling tower could occur on Jun. 27 or 28." They are also discussing the plan that officials from participating countries at 6-party talks attend the event. Some even raise the possibility that Condoleezza Rice, who is to visit S. Korea on Jun. 28 after attending G8 Foreign Minister's Conference(between Jun. 27 and Jun. 28,) would have a surprise attendance at the event. However, Kim Suk, South Korea's nuclear envoy to the six-party talks, said, "As far as I know, Americans have no such plan."
