TIKRIT, Iraq Soldiers with the 18th Engineer Brigade captured four criminals during a route clearance mission south of Tikrit, Iraq June 20.
Helicopter reconnaissance observed several suspects digging on the shoulder of the highway and directed the nearby engineers to inspect the site.
As they drove to the location, the criminals split up and fled on foot. But, the menwere intercepted by the Soldiers.
Four men were detained at nearby farm buildings who tested positive for explosive residue. The Soldiers also found a vehicle belonging to the men that contained a large amount of cash and a small circuit tester.
This incident shows great team work between air assets and our engineers, said Lt. Col. Rodney Butler, a spokesperson for the 18th Engineer Brigade. Its another great example of combined operations reacting to enemy activity in a timely fashion.

"The engineers have hairy ears, and never mess with trifles . . . "
They are since the middle of WWII in many cases officially designated as Combat Engineers and for a good historical reason that continues to this day.
Yep, Dad tells some pretty hair-raising stories. Close encounter with an 88 - being bombed and strafed by the Tuskegee Airmen - bumping helmets with a German soldier - I think his unit eventually did get designated as “Combat Engineers”. I hope they got the extra pay.
Good work by the Engineers, which saved many lives.
