The current first lady is popular mostly because she’s just a ghostly presence who stands by the president’s side and shows up in pretty clothes. She has kept her thoughts to herself and her mouth shut during most of the White House years.

Yeah, it would be so much better if she was an arrogant loudmouth, and argued with her husband in public all the time.

It amazes me how little controversy Laura Bush has caused in the last decade. In spite of that veiled "opinion" in her eyes, she has chosen the better option. I would not want to be married to her. I would not want to mess with her. But, she has......

Class. Dignity.

In general I completely agree with you.

But I'll bet you missed (or have forgotten) the annual press dinner/roast a few years ago where Laura took over for GWB at the podium and told off-color, bawdy stories about him. It was outrageous, but also fantastically funny and well-received, in part because Laura is, as you say, classy.

But it did set some records -- I don't think any other First Lady has ever told a story about going to a male strip club, or about a President masturbating a horse. Made the old story about Bess Truman (when Harry used the word "manure" and the press was scandalized, and her response was "You have no idea how long it took me to get him to say 'manure'!") seem mighty tame by comparison.

If you haven't seen the video, do so -- it's a hoot.
