New York Times Outs CIA Operative
NewsBusters.org ^ | June 22, 2008 - 10:12 ET | Mick Wright |

In an astonishing stroke of irony, the New York Times has outed the name of the CIA operative who interrogated 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, over the objections of CIA Director Michael V. Hayden and a lawyer representing the operative.

Agency officials and legal counsel told the Times that publishing the agent's name would "invade his privacy and put him at risk of retaliation from terrorists or harassment from critics of the agency."

In an Editor's Note linked from the story on KSM's interrogation, the Times defended its decision by stating that "other government employees" had been "named publicly in books and published articles" or had chosen to go public themselves, by explaining that its policy "is to withhold the name of a news subject only very rarely," and by arguing the operative's name "was necessary for the credibility and completeness of the article."

Times reporter Scott Shane describes his scoop as "the closest look to date beneath the blanket of secrecy that hides the program from terrorists and from critics who accuse the agency of torture."

The CIA apparently believes that by publishing the operative's name, the Times put the agent at risk for retaliatory strikes from such "critics" and terrorists, despite his here-described lack of participation in the agency's "harsh interrogation methods."

Of course, this is just the latest in a long string of Times articles that have leaked classified and guarded information critical to America's security and that of its people and public servants. Alert readers have long since stopped expecting any level of consistency from the same liberal media that was obsessed with the naming of Valerie Plame (though they've been considerably less obsessed with the actual source of Robert Novak's column, Richard Armitage).

It’s now the next day since the story broke and I’m still waiting for the rest of the msm to be irate against the nyt for outing a CIA agent. I promised myself not to hold my breath.

That is not an answer to the question. I am not interested in in what actions the mass media might take. As a matter of fact, I think MOST Americans can see how dangerous the revelation of the NY Times was.

Thanks. I was looking for a new tagline.

Not that it's a first...it just seems so appropriate these days.

Put some stones or metal in the envelopes to make postage cost more. Greenpeace sent me a very large return mail envelope one time - I put a brick in it and sent it back.

I wonder if the Mossad or Shin Bet would put up with one of theirs being exposed? There’s a country that could be driven into the sea at any moment, surrounded by barbarian freaks. How would THEY deal with someone exposing their folks?

Burns my A** that nothing gets done. We are in the fight of our lives for our culture, our heritage, our way of life, and our entire civilization, and an entire section of the country thinks it’s acceptable to expose our own people to the enemy.

Even the Socialist FDR threatened one of the Chicago newspapers when they said they were going to publish the fact that we broke the Japanese Naval Code (JN25). I believe he sent a company of Marines (OORAH!) to surround the building with orders to arrest the editors and consficate their printing presses if they went to press. (may have some details wrong, but that’s the gist of it).

Different time, and a country mostly filled with American Patriots, make all the difference, I suppose...

One team, one fight, folks - we’re all on the same side at the end of the day. Peace.

“the libs at the nytimes are at it again!”

TRAITORS!

incorrect. LOW-LIFE SCU&BAGS! is correct.

(you shouldn’t insult traitors)

Now that is much better than shooting journalists in the elevator - or poisoning their tea.

Roger that, but we ARE in the fight of our lives here. Extreme measures to deal with traitors could save THOUSANDS of lives in the long run. Suppose the CIA operative who was exposed was in process of unraveling a plot to nuke an American City, and the people he was trailing have now gotten away?

If my sons were overseas and were endangered because of this, I would not shed one tear if the scumbags at the NYT got their just rewards. It’s brutal, but it is a reality of the times in which we find ourselves.

George Washington was going to HANG Benedict Arnold (who had been a dear friend of his) if he had been caught.

Not hammering you, either. Just presenting things the way I see them.

I see it much as you do.

The press still wants to hand the Plame affair around Cheney’s neck so they can “impeach” him.

I am assuming there must be some law that is being broken here when it comes to outing a CIA agent.

It does seem that in the name of national security, our government shouldn’t be helpless in dealing with traitorous journalists.

So... Two can play this game.....

The NYT editors have names, addresses, spouses, children, schools, clubs, etc.

Post them to Islamic websites.

Hypocrisy doesn’t apply to liberals.

It's more truthful than "all the news that's fit to print" - - or whatever the New York Time's mantra is...

Good God NO.

Radical Islamists would be sending the editor's families thank you cards and presents if they had their addresses.

This is bad enough as is - why make it worse?
