I understand and appreciate the military necessity of paratroopers. Intellectually. I appreciate paratroopers.

me too. My grandson is Sky Soldier with 173rd in Afghanistan - in the most dangerous province and spot of the WOT

Prayers lifted. I fed a boat-load of them.

I just don't get it.

. . guy tells his buddy “I didn’t think I could do it. I was so scared”

“so then what happened”

“the jumpmaster was this huge Ranger. he showed me this club and said if I didn’t jump, he was going to put it where the sun don’t shine!”

“Oh my! did you jump?”

“yeah, a little; at first”

I don't give a rat's pointy little tail how tough the jump-master is. I don't exit functional aircraft.

I fed over 70,000 meals at a remote camp with less than 60 cadre and a literal "boatload" of reservists. They brought them in on a landing craft.

I cooked for part of the last war. Before that, I was old crow. But these days, I'm just old.

Was just wondering - as where my grandson's unit is - so isolated, no running water, no PX’s, no power - and then off on mountain patrols for up to 4 weeks, humping 100 lbs packs and weapons like mountain goats, full gear in brutal heat = they expend a lot of energy - and get really hungry for something other that MRE’s - we have sent dozens and dozens of boxes with supplies and food...

Part of my last role was to provide care and comfort to guys like your grandson.

I can only say that he is in good hands, and if he has a choice, he should head for an AF DFAC. Really, really.

We also build bowling alleys.

He was just a cherry trooper and he surely shook with fright

It was "rookie trooper" when I went through Airborne Training in 1974. Just checked my class album to be sure.

I was a "pole man" during tower week. Remember the others chanting :hit the hole pole man, hit the hole." To emphasize the point, two Black Hats took me into the tower shack at the base of the tower and showed me some "holes". Needless to say, they don't have those type of pictures pinned up any more.

Airborne training was the most fun three weeks I ever had associated with the Army.

"Your Fricken Nuts! (sic)"

What about my frickin' nuts! Just kidding, I retired years ago after about 275 jumps and 2 hours of logged freefall time...just wasn't pumping enough adrenaline anymore. So maybe "nuts" in the past tense, maybe...

Not that anyone will read this or anything but Shindig was a Force Recon Jumpmaster.. Only Marine FreeFall Instructor on the show called Halo Freefall Warriors. Plays on the Military Channel all the Time. I served and fought in combat with Shindig. Rick had over 4,000 jumps and was on a Jump team that placed 4th in the world. Many combat tours under his belt, when its your time to go, its your time!

RIP Brother!

I would wager that the rate of deaths from flying in general aviation aircraft is probably higher than skydiving. That alone is good enough reason to bail out.

Doesn't the jumper rely on GA?

The victim died at the scene.

Now that is understatement of the obvious at its best
