A new audit concludes that rookie attorneys with Republican roots got interviewed for plum Justice Department jobs while their liberal-leaning counterparts got passed over.
The Justice Department's Inspector General and Office of Professional Responsibility released the audit Tuesday, revealing that a screening program installed in 2002 weeded out job applicants who had liberal or Democratic ties. Improper use of the screening program peaked in 2006, when politics and ideology disqualified what the audit called a significant number of newly graduated lawyers and summer interns seeking jobs.
The long-awaited report confirms widespread criticism last year that the once fiercely independent Justice Department was victim to political meddling by the Bush administration. The scandal led to the resignation last September of former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
"Many qualified candidates were deselected by the screening committee because of their perceived political or ideological affiliations" in 2006, the audit concludes.
In 2006, under Gonzales' watch, political party and ideology were the chief criteria for getting highly-coveted entry-level jobs in the department, reports CBS' Stephanie Lambidakis. Two former top officials, Mike Elston and Esther Slater McDonald, are accused of outright misconduct for violating civil service laws that ban discrimination, according to the audit.
Elston and McDonald scoured Google and MySpace to screen top Harvard, Yale and Stanford graduates for their political leanings.
For example, Lambidakis points out, three candidates were rejected as "leftists" because they belonged to Greenpeace and anti-poverty groups and a top Harvard law school graduate was flagged for being a member of the Council on American Islamic Relations. One Justice Department official even wondered in an e-mail whether striking another highly qualified Harvard graduate who worked for Planned Parenthood "could be perceived as politically motivated."
Yet again, the department has been putting politics where it doesn't belong. House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich. The audit found that such disqualifications "constituted misconduct and also violated the department's policies and civil service law that prohibit discrimination in hiring based on political or ideological affiliation."
Two of the people who ran the job applicant screening program in 2006 no longer work at Justice, however, and "are no longer subject to discipline by the department for their actions," the report found.
Democrats quickly seized on the report to bludgeon the Bush administration for playing politics with law and order.
"Yet again, the department has been putting politics where it doesn't belong," House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich., said in a statement. "When it comes to the hiring of nonpartisan career attorneys, our system of justice should not be corrupted by partisan politics. It appears the politicization at Justice was so pervasive that even interns had to pass a partisan litmus test."
Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., called the audit "troubling" and said he expects to see more evidence later "on the extent to which the Bush administration has allowed politics to affect and infect the department's priorities."
The audit is the first of several reports to be issued this year looking at how deeply politics seeped into the Justice Department during the Bush administration. Internal Justice watchdogs - at the department's Office of Inspector General and Office of Professional Responsibility - also are looking at the firing of nine U.S. attorneys in 2006 and management problems by Gonzales during his two years as attorney general.
Gonzales' successor, Attorney General Michael Mukasey, said he agrees with all the audit's recommendations to prevent politics from influencing the screening process - and has already moved on them.
"I have also made clear, and will continue to make clear, that the consideration of political affiliations in the hiring of career department employees is impermissible and unacceptable," Mukasey said in a statement.
This is why we call them: See BS!
Too darn funny
And KKKLINTOON fired the whole damn bunch of Republican leftovers when HE came in to office, and not a word was said...................
The HORROR!!!
Yes, certainly. The Justice Department was fair & balanced under such AGs as Janet Reno and Bobby Kennedy--the president's own brother.
The problem with Alberto Gonzalez was not that he was partisan, but that he was incompetent.
No wonder Gonzo never remembered anything!
Bless W’s little heart . Not firing everyone of them was an inexplicable inaction beyond a reasonable expectation of good faith to the point of being a kindness that was certain not to be repaid .
They interviewed republicans for jobs????
The HORROR!!!
::::::
Yes, terrifying!!! Why, that could endanger totalitarian socialism in America — such treason!!!
Unintended consequences alert: Does this mean that if Obama gets elected, cBS will hold him to a standard where half of his DOJ hires have to be Republicans? I am not holding my breath.
I knew it!
The DOJ is dominated by Conservatives.
Well they sure didn't do a very good job of it, if that was the plan...
If this was their idea of "weeding out", I'm not having these guys get anywhere near my lawn (there's enough weeds in it already)...
What’s wrong with this? We had a Republican President, a Republican Congress and a Republican Attorney General. They have the right to promote their ideological friends and reject Democrats and Liberals who are their enemies and the enemies of America.
I sent See BS an email about this story. Told them I was laughing out loud at them. Told them they have no credibility. Told them the laugh factor alone for this story was at the falling-on-the-floor level. Told them, this is why there are known across the country as SEE BS.
What a bunch of clymers they are.
Meanwhile, W and his New Tone got taken to the cleaners with partisan hacks in the State Dept., CIA and DOJ...this "study" nothwithstanding. Look how fast the DOJ reverted to form after John Ashcroft was fired resigned [rooooight...]. Suddenly the DOJ is taking the side of the gun-grabbers in D.C.... so say "so long 2nd Amendment"....
Even if Republicans appointed all DOJ new hires, 43% would vote with the most leftwing Democrats. Exhibit A: U.S. Supreme Court— three justices appointed by Republican administrations generally vote the far left party line. Two of the three are almost indistinguishable from the two far left appointees of Clinton.
I think it is more likely that the advancements went to people who did their jobs regardless of ideology or politics. Liberals don’t have a similar work ethic. If they disagree with their boss, they sabotage their boss, their colleagues, and their clients and consider it their moral obligation to do so.
Also, I’d like to know just how many lawyers whose politics could best be described as “conservative” were hired by the Bubby/Reno DOJ. Don’t remember anyone asking for that report - do you?
Is it just me, or is it a no-brainer that the Justice Dept would want lawyers that actually believe in prosecuting criminals instead of coddling them? Perish the thought.
~faith.
Yet it is acceptable for Congress to block conservative Justices!
