I am a registered Medical Technologist, taught Chemistry and Nutrition for many years, and I still teach Human Anatomy. You are absolutely right about HDL since it is the “protective” form of plasma lipids. It is made up of less cholesterol and more protein so that it is able to pick up cholesterol and take it back to the liver to be metabolized. This is how it actually reduces the blood cholesterol level and thus the risk of heart attack. To my knowledge, the only thing that will increase the HDL is exercise, something that many people dislike and/or can not seem to find the time for.
