High court strikes down Washington D.C. law in ruling that could have Chicago implications -
An angry Mayor Richard Daley on Thursday called the Supreme Court's overturning of the Washington D.C. gun ban "a very frightening decision" and vowed to fight vigorously any challenges to Chicago's ban.
The mayor, speaking at a Navy Pier event, said he was sure mayors nationwide, who carry the burden of keeping cities safe, will be outraged by the decision.
Chicago's handgun ban, which has lasted for more than a quarter-century, came under threat earlier in the day when the Supreme Court decided that Washington D.C.'s law against handgun ownership is unconstitutional.
In a 5-4 decision, the high court determined that Americans have the right to own guns for self-defense as well as hunting. The decision, which had been expected, is a win for gun-rights advocates and provides a better definition of the rights of Americans to own firearms.
Illinois gun-rights activists have said they expect to mount a quick legal challenge to the Chicago Weapons Ordinance.
It was the first time in nearly 70 years that the court had taken up broad questions about the 2nd Amendment's protections of the right to bear arms. The city of Chicago, which has had its own ban on handgun ownership since 1982, had filed a brief with the court in support of the ban in January.

The mayor should constantly wear brown pants to hide his obvious fear the peons intend to be armed.
Is Mayor Daley more afraid of this court decision, or more afraid of the youth gangs in Chicago who have weapons in violations of his laws? Is he at all afraid of the gangs who have made vast areas of his city a wasteland and a war zone?
Too bad mayor dumba**, the Supremes have upheld the constitution and you must also. Yes, it always scares dictators and those wishing to control the people when they can go freely armed. It is very telling when a politician lets his butt hang out with statements like this.
It’s hilarious how the Constitution puts that level of fear in these clowns.
It’s even scarier knowing it was a 5-4 decision that upheld it.
So the Mayor of Chicago thinks that the US Supreme Court upholding the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution is a very frightening decision.
Way to go citizens of Chicago. Thanks for voting this moron into public office.
And it will not do him a bit of good. Sorry Charley. The game is over.
I agree that a 5-4 decision is the scariest thing. Wayyyy too close.
It’s simply idiotic for liberals to think that banning guns keeps them out of the hands of criminals.
Statistics continue to prove otherwise.
Why of course Democrats like Mayor Daley is upset over this decision! This really throws a kink into the plans for Communisim for America.
I suppose free speech is very frightening too, eh, mayor?
If Obama is elected and gets to appoint radical-Liberal judges to the Supreme Court, this type of 5-4 decision will be the other way around.
“Benna Solomon, deputy corporation counsel for the city, asserted that the Supreme Court decision only applies to the federal government. Washington D.C., she said, is part of the federal government, but Chicago is an independent home-rule unit of Illinois.”
I can see their argument beginning to form from this knothead. So I’m guessing that when Scalia stated that it applies to indivduals, he only meant federal government individuals? It’s not wonder liberals are idiots, they can’t grasp simple words...sheesh.
Mayor Daley knows full well that the crime problem in his city is the fault of absent, failing parents. He can’t say that, because he needs their votes. So he goes after the law abiding citizens, blaming them and demonizing the only way they can protect themselves.
The hypocrisy is palpable: Daley has a huge, armed security detail.
The beauty of this is that crime will surely drop once the citizens ‘gun up’.
Now all we need is concealed carry.
“...Thanks for voting this moron into public office.” Him and his horse, Obama, too.
Chicago is a patriotic town. They even raised the dead to elect JFK.
Gun bans are worthless to criminals anyway, they get their guns from the black/underground market.
Freedom of Religion just stops his heart if he has one.
Personally I’m in favor of hanging anyone who passes a law later found to be unconstitutional. That includes Congress but especially applies to two-bit pocket despots such as Daley. I might be talked down to lengthy prison sentences, though.
da mare's fun to watch when flustered
I’m sure free speech is frightening to Dick Daley if you have anything bad to say about his corrupt rear.
