June 26, 2008 -- Little dogs -- think Chihuahuas and Dachshunds -- tend to be feisty, while certain breeds, like Golden and Labrador Retrievers, are as mellow as their reputations suggest, found a new study that identified the most and least aggressive common dog breeds.

A friend gave us their Corgy/Dachsund mix. He IS feisty AND smart. He is only 6 months old. I hope he grows our of the feistiness, before I beat it our of him.

Just joking. He’s great.

Aw! What cuties! We have a minature dachshund and our son has a dachshund that’s called a “tweeny” because his weight and size are inbetween the minature and standard sized dachshunds. You are so right about someone coming in uninvited!! No one even comes down our driveway unannounced anymore, in his mind our little dachshund is a Rottweiller! He backs down our big fat Catahoula all the time. Very protective, very smart and the funniest breed we’ve ever had!

I also note that Irish Setters (either show or sporting breed) are not listed. I presume that’s because they are to ADD to sustain a grudge or engage in aggressive behavior. Ours is the picture of domestic lunacy and docility, until you try to groom him. Then, you’d better have a whip and chair in hand or a tranquilizer gun.

Our boxer, on the other hand, is the most docile, loving, slobbering, shedding bundle of plumpness you can imagine. She looks ferocious, but she’d lead you to the family jewels and wait for her treat.

Typo, that should be “...too ADD...”

It should be noted that male dachshunds have an uncanny ability to mate with any female dog variety. And will, when you least expect it.

I love the pugs, except for one thing.....they shed horribly

Huh! Try a Pembroke Corgi. They shed constantly. I used to own Shelties, and they would blow their coat once a year; but, the corgi sheds ALL the time, and Spring is just awful (as I look at my downstairs carpet and little tufts of hair all over it).

However, they are so cute and have such great personalities that all is forgiven. For anyone thinking that this sounds good, I would recommend a Corgi (Pembroke) if your kids are at least 6 or 7. They love their people, but I don't think they are very patient with little kids who would be pulling at them.

Again, a small dog body, with a large dog spirit. Our Griffyn will chase a ball forever.

Correct. I saw a dachsund try to mount a border collie in Central Park some time ago.

I wish our neighbor's Shiba Inu didn't bark a lot. He barks incessantly, ALL the time.

Of course, they leave him outside by himself all day -- he barks frantically at my two lady Labs whenever we go by, they do the doggie equivalent of a smile and a wave, which just makes him more frantic.

Poor guy. They don't take proper care of him.

No big surprise.

The term "feist" - an old Southern word - means a small, yappy, bouncy dog of indeterminate parentage.

I will say that my Labs are not so mellow as all that, being field bred.

My 100% field bred black Lab is so feisty, she rushed my camera at age 7 weeks:

'course, she just wanted to give me a great big sloppy puppy kiss, not eat me alive. After all, I had just rescued her from the cargo hold of a jetliner and an open baggage cart on the apron at Hartsfield Atlanta.

We have a Corgi, too, and everything you said is right on - especially about being so cute that all is forgiven. :)

I take it you almost had an Siberian Dachshund from an amorous Doxy’s romantic exploits. You've got to give him an “A” for optimism.

I was behind a van the other day that had two stickers:

“That’s not a dirty window, it’s my dachshund’s nose art”,

and the one that made me snort my Diet Pepsi:

“If you can see my wiener, you’re too close!”
