In the most important decision about the Second Amendment in the history of the United States, the Supreme Court today released its decision today, affirming the simple-but-monumental fact that this vital piece of the Bill of Rights guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms.
Of course, this is the Heller case -- the D.C. gun ban case, if you prefer. In Washington, D.C., handguns are banned, and citizens there are prohibited from having any functional firearm in their homes, even for self-defense. In a well-planned lawsuit challenging that ban on the basis of the Second Amendment, attorney Alan Gura artfully presented his arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court this spring.

Okay, let's review -- the Second Amendment says, "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
The decision of SCOTUS is, as expected, narrow in scope, but it does affirm that this right is guaranteed to individuals, rather than some nebulous "collective," a fictitious construct which had infected courts over the last several decades. We now are faced with years, and decades, of legal expeditions to discover where lie the boundaries of "reasonable restrictions" on this right.

"Supreme Court says Americans have right to guns"
...actually I think someone already gave them that right many years ago....morons
Before we celebrate too much - we only won that decision 5-4! Four liberal activists think the people don’t have the right to bear arms. Think about what will happen when/if BHO is pres and he appoints 2-3 SC justices. Kiss the constitution goobye.
a big one!
Exactly why the Bill of Rights needs to be changed so that the Supreme Court can never address this again.
Hopefully the beginning of more big victorys.
I still cannot get a CCW in my county.
You are absolutely correct. We managed to avoid a major amendment of the Constitution by ONE man’s vote, and that vote is not the least bit dependable. Anyone that has not been paying attention does not realize how many times our Constitutional rights have been diminished by the rogue court system.
The Constitution spells out the amendment process and it doesn’t include the court system.
Yes... The GUN Owners won!!
Stevens and Ginsberg are both holding out hope that they can retire under Obama and be replaced with another liberal. It is absolutely ESSENTIAL that we get McCain in the WH.
Truthfully, I believe that McCain, in spite of he “maverick” tendencies, is actually truer to conservatism that GWB. McCain has a long history of voting against pork barrel and Bush signs the bills with no questions.
Are you and I the only ones who think that a rather strange proposition? When I was a youth, all of us used to save our money and when we had accumulated $0.18 we would run down to the hardware and purchase a box of 50 .22's, then we formed a rather loose formation (just what would you expect of some 10 - 15 year old children) and with our Christmas or Birthday rifle held proudly for all to see, we marched on down to the city dump where we would begin the process of reducing the vermin population.
As we approached our objective, we often were greeted by the mayor (my cousin tom's dad) or sometimes by the constable. No one ever gave a second though to what we chose to do for entertainment. Sometimes we would shoot a rabbit and in the fall we always managed to get a pheasant or two for supper.
You also asked: "States or local governments should not be allowed to trump the federal government on constitutional issues."
As the announcer used to say on the radio, please stay tuned to this station for another exciting chapter of how the new kids kicked the feds out of town. Watch for the term "Incorporation" which is soon to come to your town any day now.
